We did a foreign body removal surgery on a doberman back in my vet clinic days and sure enough, it was a greenie That $2 greenie ended up costing them near $1000 One of my close pug friends had an incident with a greenie where the pug swallowed a hunk and it tore a hole in his trachea. He was hospitalized for quite some time. The company that makes greenies actually ended up paying for the treatment. Needless to say, my dogs no longer get them...ever!
It was a hard habit to break! My dogs loved them more than any other chew bone! In fact, they almost turned them into freaks they liked them so much! I think that is part of the problem, dogs like the taste so much that they end up scarfing them and swallowing big chunks whole.
Showpug I know... My dogs go insane for greenies. I always get Ripley the huge sized ones, though, so he can't swallow big chunks but I can see where the larger dogs would run into trouble there.
Actually the Greenie packages have instructions on them for which ones to give to what size dogs so giving a small dog a large Greenie isn't necessarily a good or safe thing to do.
As far as I'm concerned, none of them are safe. The pieces cause intestinal blockages as well as choking hazards. I know a lot of you on this forum also belong to Dogster so I'm sure you've read the threads written by people who's dogs have died from Greenies.
I don't care what the percentage is of deaths compared to quantities sold. I will NEVER give my dog Greenies. I will not play Russian Roulette with my dogs life.
There are a lot of people on dogster that have lost dogs to it. The problem isn't even chewing, but that even the chips kind of mold back together in the intestine causing the blockage. I've heard so many people have problems with them I am shocked they still sell at all. We had them for my dogs once and what came out of them scared me out of giving them again
I'm glad I've never given them to see what a fix dogs have on them... What the h*ll are they, METH for DOGS??? I'll give a Frosty Paw every once in awhile instead...

Frosty Paws = Doggie Ice cream. It comes in little cups like those little ice cream sundays and is in the freezer section at the grocery store. (well, at least it is in the "states").
I used to give them to Mack but they were too expensive for the rate he went through them. Then I heard all the bad things about them so I stopped all together and gave bully sticks and the natural bones (no rawhide). I will stick with the raw bones and stuff for my dogs.
I recently bought 1 for Mango, she chewed 1/2 of it and puked ... Glad that she puked then it gets stuck in the stomach. Can't imagine having to get her operated for that
