Twas the night before Christmas,
and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
the stockings were hung by the chimeny with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With nary a thought of the dog in their heads.
And mamma in her kerchief and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but who cared about that?

When out on the lawn there rose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
The dog must be loose; he's into the trash!

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus with eyes full of tears.

He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last year's Christmas gift, now thin and sick.
More rapid than eagles, he called the dogs name,
And the dog went right to him, despite all his pain.
Now DASHER, Now DANCER, Now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On COMET on CUPID on DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!!
Let's find him a home where he'll be loved by all!!

I knew in an instant there were not gifts this year.
For Santa had made our mistake very clear.
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten a pup for all the wrong reasons.

In our haste to think of a gift for the kids,
There was something important that we had missed.
A dog should be family, and cared for the same.
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.

And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"YOU WERE NOT GIVEN A GIFT!! YOU WERE GIVEN A LIFE."

IMPORTANT!!! DON'T PURCHASE AT CHRISTMAS, DON'T PURCHASE FROM PET STORES (YOU ARE SUPPORTING PUPPYMILLS IF YOU DO), DON'T PURCHASE FROM BACKYARD BREEDERS.
REMEMBER!! RESEARCH FIRST, PURCHASE SECOND, NO PUPPY SHOULD LEAVE ITS LITTERMATES AND MOTHER BEFORE 8 WKS OF AGE

Good people, I mean to post this sooner. But I print off this poem each year and put them up around Pet Stores and Grocery Stores in the hopes that people will THINK before purchasing a pup for someone at Christmas.

i soo agree so many times people think "aww cute little puppy under the tree with a pretty red bow and cute little eyes and wet nose... then BAM! out the door they go... that is why i got my pup from my dad's next door neighbor ( thunder) my grandma new her for over 30 years, and Cinni she came from a rescue... this should be posted more often in petstores, puppies are cute and cuddly, but they do GROW UP and get BIG!! thanks for posting this you are a true dog person!

Very nice! I wish EVERYONE had the opportunity to read this and take it to heart.

I can honestly say that I have NEVER received a pet of any kind as a gift, nor have I ever given one.

Very touchy, hope those breeders and dollar-eyed people read this. I'll be posting this one too somewhere around.

I hate when people give surprise puppy gifts. I did get a horse for my birthday, but I had already talked about getting one forever and my parents knew exactly what traits I wanted in him. Plus, I went with them to buy him to make sure he was the right one.

Great poem, I'm gonna e-mail it to people. I received my cat for Christmas but it's me...I would care for a spider if you put it in a tank and told me here's your new pet. Plus my parents would have cared for him if I had not liked him (which could never happen in the first place) and I wasn't a little kid. I learned getting puppies for Christmas was bad back when I was little and watched homeward bound (the movie with Shadow the Golden Retriever, Chance the American Bulldog and sassy the cat) when they were lost in San Francisco I believe. The Rottie (I think) pup was given to a kid for Christmas, under the tree with a bow, the kid liked his other toys better so they abandoned the puppy on the side of the road in a box and he had to grow up on the street :( What's even more sad is that's not just what happens in the movies, stupid people do it too. GREAT POEM!

I posted it on my myspace bulletin. So the animal neglecter would soo get the message. (the person is on my friend's list, because of this) I oh so want to chew them out.. grr. But I am not going to unless they say something first. I want to make him realize the damage he has done to Oz. My friend's dog. Great again!
