GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! SO, SO close.
Les and I went out turkey hunting this morning. We find a good spot and get set up. Not much going on for about the first hour or so. Jokes are whispered back and forth about needing more "padding". LOL
So we decide to get up and go to a different spot. While we are getting our gear together we suddenly hear this THUNDEROUS gobble from a little thicket about 50 yards away. We look at each other and freeze. The bird gobbles again and now I am in a pickle. My gun is 20 yards away. We both drop down and get seated quickly. I start calling and the bird is just thundering away in responce. Then we see him... A beautiful 20-22 pounder. He has the lightest blue head I can recall ever seeing and at least a 8 inch beard. I keep leading him in and he is full on going for it. Stopping for a full strut now and then, it was just gorgeous.... A picture perfect setup.
He gets about 10 steps away from being in Les's field of fire. Les is all drawn up and aiming, but the bird is just a smidge out of range. Then, the bird stops moving. He starts moving in circles, in full strut. Then, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, he starts back up the hill. 5 minutes later he is gone.
My guess is he got nervous because he heard sound but could not see our decoys. There was a big dead tree in the way, that is now all cut up and out of the area. LOL We are going back for that guy next week.
So, 2 "almost but no dice" hunts this year. What a love/hate relationship I have with Wild Turkeys. LOL
