Very good point, Avenlee! Mine get so PMS-y that I don't even pay attention to the slight runs they get - too many other symptoms  , plus they typically go way out in the pasture or in the weeds around the perimeter of the yard so I don't generally see the "state of the poop" until I'm keeping them leashed for the duration . . .

Something I would also consider would be coltis, especially with the poo's being runny/slimy and have blood in it?

I doubt she is in season...she's only 3 1/2 months old. I've seen Colitis too and it doesn't look like that. It's just weird how her poop ranges from normal looking to slimy/icky between bowel movements. I am beginning to think that there is nothing seriously wrong with her and that I'm just being a freak. She has been eating really well, she's energetic and feisty and her coat is nice and shiny. She is due for a trip to the Vet next week so I guess I will just wait it out til then unless something drastic happens.
You guys are really helpful and very nice. I am glad I didn't offend anyone.

Just wanted to put my two cents in!!! Tapeworms cause blood and mucous in the stool and this can come and go or be permanent. I know that you said that your dog had a fecal test done, but tapeworms usually do not show up on fecal testing...I only know this from working with the tests for 5 years in a vet clinic. There is not 1 dewormer on the market that treats against all the different types of worms out there. Do you remember the name of the dewormer your vet gave? There is a good chance your pooch has tapeworms and they are not showing up on the test and the vet has not prescribed a dewormer that covers tapes. PLUS- to complicate things even more, there are two different types of tapeworms and most dewormers only treat one or the other, but not both. Puppies get tapes from momma or from fleas/environment. Write back and tell me the name of the dewormer you gave or that your vet prescribed. Also, I won't bash Nutro too much, but I have known many dogs to have loose stool while on this food. Canidae ALWAYS firms my dogs right up and that is what I use for diarrhea or, a TSP of canned pumpkin with no spices once or twice a day will also do the trick :)

edit: OK I see it now in the FIRST post that you did state her age! DUH me ! ( maybe I was looking to hard, lol)

I didn't realize she was just 3 1/2 (in fact I looked back to see if you told the age) My westie went into her first season at 4 months old. I know, that was pretty early and I was freaked out about all the 'stuff' lol I never went through a dog in heat before and thought there was no way it would come that early. I do agree no matter what that it does warrant a mention to the vet. You said she has an appointment next week and that's fine. If it worsens though I'd bring her down ASAP.

And thank you but don't worry There's more than a handfull of us here that won't take offense of anything! We may debate ... but no offense taken :)

All Colitis is, is an inflammation of the bowel/large intestine etc. The bowel can become inflammed in a lot of different situations, but usually will go away once the pup is well. Colitis can also be a disease, but is usually seen in adult/older dogs. I believe they do an intestinal biopsy to confirm the condition.

Hey Showpug....Don't know the name of the dewormer used. I can ask. I just know that she got a dose her first and second visit. I just read up on tapeworms in a vet handbook and it says there is no dewormer for tapeworms. (???) Why wouldn't they show up in a fecal test? I have seen them in stool before and also around dogs and cats anus's. Just wondering.....
I haven't seen any in Chyna's poop yet but it's something worth considering. How would the Vet test for them? The book I used as reference also says that if the infestation was mild, there may not be any symptoms but in moderate cases, there would be some diarreha, dulling of coat and loss of appetite. Her coat is nice and shiny and she eats like a horse!
She doesn't seem to be pooping as frequently lately but is still waking me up at least twice at night to go. I am hoping the Nutro Ultra may be helping. One good thing about it is there is no corn in it. That can only be a good thing, right?
Chilled....if I get to the Vet before you do, I will let you know what they say about it and if you get to yours first, let me know what yours says.
Again, thanks for all of your help everyone and I will keep you posted (unless I am boring the heck out of you! In that case, let me know.. :D )

You're not boring us at all!

When Maverick had tapeworms we could see them coming out of his bum. They'd were really long and spaghetti-like. Pretty gross. They'd go in and out of him and he'd sometimes bite them off  Nasty. When they are really bad they look like rice in the poop I think. the vet gave us a tablet to give maverick and we cleaned the whole apartment from top to bottom and gave him the pill and that was it! I know most dewormers don't cover tapeworms because the vet gave us dewormers twice before he figured out it was tapeworms.

hello thewhitewitchone.
took him to the vet.
they said its nothing serious, just must have a bug that wont shift.
they gave him antibotics injection and tablets and some liquid to settle the pooh.
i think thats what yours have.
try not to keep changing the food. take him to the vets to get treatment.
try feed him the same food or rice and boiled/roasted chicken (no fat or oil.) if you cant get the vets.
will let you know if he gets better.
tell me how you get on

There are dewormers for tapeworm. Shiva had a case, but while I was researching to figure out which treatment was the least toxic for the dog and debating the options with myself, then trying to actually find the products, I realized she had thrown them off herself! I had switched the dogs to the Innova EVO as they were old enough to make the change. I think that, and the fact that they had been getting superior nutrition from the time I brought them home, allowed her body to reject the parasite on its own. Neither of the other dogs ever even got tapeworm.

Just wanted to update you all....
For 4 nights in a row now, Chyna has not woken me up to poop! (yay!!) Seems the problem has resolved itself...with a little help from me. The change in food (now feeding Nutro Ultra) seems to have done the trick. Also, I was pretty much free feeding her before because she took so long to eat (she was a grazer) and now she is being fed 3 times a day, last meal around 4 p.m. She loves the new food and eats it all every time. Course I feel bad later in the evening if she acts hungry and give her a small handful of her food as a snack.
She does poop much less on this new food too.
Chilled...I hope your puppy is doing better!

O.K. guys I need help... I've been reading this thread and trying to figure out what our new pup has. We have had him for almost a week now and up until last night he has had soft stools (yuk) I contributed that from switching him from garbage dog food (Pro Pac) to Canidea... Well at 1:30 a.m. he woke me to go potty and it was soft yet again but this time with spaghetti like worms in it (I thought I was going to die), I have never seen worms before and it was just god aweful.

He has his first vet appt. tonight @ 5:20 and I want to make sure I ask the right questions and get the right medicine, so any thoughts are appreciated. Oh by the way, he came from a pet store that sold him to an old friend of ours and of course within a couple weeks they couldn't handle him and we took him in. He is 11 weeks old and they have not had him vet checked yet.

I'll tell you, Pet STores will sell to anyone. I really didn't want another puppy with Cocoa being almost a year old now but I couldn't allow them to turn this pup into the shelter as young and little as it is.

Sorry putting my 2 cents in. If it is spagetti like the vet should give you a liquid usually pyrantel (sp?) and they should give you 2 doses. If they have tape worms they look like rice or small segments and more b4 they die (you have to see them right away or they are gone) that takes a pill or a shot. Both can be determined by a fecal test, sometimes it is possible that it's missed, like if there is a low concentration or the tech misses it but not usually.
For the diarreha or soft poop the canned pumpkin or a bland diet seems to be best. We actually do boiled chicken and rice, then when they are better we slowly reintroduce them back to dog food. Sometimes it takes a wk or more.
Also if they are eating and passing their poop (even soft) it's a good thing, it rules out things like bowl ubstructions or bloat, etc.
Let us know what the vet says.

Be sure to bring a stool sample with you to the vet. He should definitely get a checkup by the vet since your friend didn't do this. Let us know how you make out.

It's always a mystery when they get like this, unless they have eaten something unusual. One of my old dogs had soft stools most of the time, that's just the way she was, no matter what we fed her, they would be "soft servish" at best. She lived a normal life with few problems until the very end. Most of her problems were due to ear infections. The right one 90% of the time.

One of the dogs I have now, Molly makes very big, solid ones all the time, King varies, depending on what he's eating.

Help...I have a three and a half month old Westie that has horrible gas. I started her on Science Diet Lamb and Rice for puppies. Her gas would clear the room. I decided to switch her to Royal Canin mini puppy food. I noticed that her poop was a "soft serve" consistecy and it had a horrible odor. She has been eating it for three days. She would eat her whole bowl everytime. This morning she would not eat at all. When I took her out before breakfast, she pooped and it seemed to be a normal consistancy(harder). She ate nothing for breakfast and then I took her out before leaving for work and she pooped again. This time the poop was softer and had a bit of mucous in it.

She came home from the breeder with kennel cough adn was treated for it with a round of clavamox. She finished it up abut still has a slight cough after she gets up from a nap or first thing in the morning. Her nose is also a little runny. It is a clear liquid, no yellow or green stuff.

I guess I am wondering, is it the food change, the return of the kennel cough, allergies or a combination. I would really like to help her get rid of the gas and the runny nose. Maybe she is digesting the mucous from her nose and it is exiting in the poop. Help!
