I have Bear here with me now. Literally, in the study, on leash. He's been getting along really well with the other 3, but I decided I really needed to start working on getting him used to being in the house.

Poor sweet guy. He startles at EVERYTHING! He jumps when the icemaker in the freezer dumps ice. He stares up in horror at the ceiling fans. He's currently staring at me, and won't even try to get comfortable in the house.
I imagined that acclimating him would be a trial, but this is downright wrong. He doesn't want to sleep on pillows or the beanbag chair (Stormy's absolute favorite), I think because they just feel weird to him. I want him to feel at home. The poor guy is going to be a nightmare to train I fear because he has no interest in anything . Toys are foreign to him. Treats? He has so far passed up mini marshmallows, hotdog pieces, cheddar cheese, dog treats, bread...everything. Even his food doesn't get him jazzed up. I think a trip to petsmart is in order. Maybe if I let him choose we'll find something he likes.
He's panting like crazy. He's not thirsty, and he shouldn't be too hot. I think he's just nervous.
I'm so mad at his past owners. Poor dog is so anti social it's not funny. Everything is new to him.
At least he seems to like Tim and I, and he found his voice for the first time today. He has a high pitched bark, which reminds me of a border collie or sheltie . I'm hoping that we can teach "speak" and "quiet" pretty soon. First mission: find the appropriate treat.
*facepalm* What have I gotten myself into?

Give him time, he'll come around. Trust me. Annie took almost a year of work, she was practically feral when I got her, and every noise, sound, and sight made her scream in fear and near kill herself trying to get away.

It took a LOT of patience. She didn't know what a bed, a treat, a toy, or anything was. Now, she loves toys, loves treats, and knows several commands. Just start slowly, take your time, and have patience. It'll pay off. :)

I forget, how long have you had him? Poor guy though, to be so nervous of everything. I'd give him time and let him tell you how fast he wants to proceed. Sawyer would barely eat the first week I had him.

Sounds like my Argon. The main issue right not is patience. Training may end up being a nightmare (the beginning was for Argon), but training isn't the focus now. I know it's painful to watch him struggle, but he will come around eventually. Just keep everything very low-key. Let him be close to you if he likes, but don't rush to smother him.
It took Argon a few weeks before he even wanted to look at me. I've had him 10 months now, and he still doesn't know what toys are, but every day things get a little bit better.
As far as food goes, try a Pepperoni. That was the only thing that made Argon happy in the beginning. Of course, not too many, because you don't want an icky stomach upset! :)

Sounds to me like what you've gotten yourself into is a labor of love :)

Seeing Sunny and Stormy interacting with you and playing should help. Just keep on letting Bear take things at an easy pace. That panting you're describing is stress. You might try getting some Rescue Remedy :)

Take everything verrry slooowww and make sure you don't freak out at him or with him. Just show him that everything is no big deal. Be calm, cool and nonchalant. And I don't recommend taking him out to Petsmart at this point, it might be way too much for him right now, help his confidence grow at home first.
