Hailey has been chattering her teeth for the past 2 days. She’s never done it before, but we have seen her do it 6 times now. It lasts for about a minute, then stops completely. It tends to happen more when something “exciting†is happening, like when we get home from work. But it also has happened when there’s nothing going on and all is calm, as well.

Molly has been licking Hailey’s muzzle excessively as well.

I checked her mouth and everything looks alright, though she is missing the very tip of one tooth and I don’t know if she just broke it, or if it was like that before. Could breaking the tip of a tooth cause teeth chattering?

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

The only time I've seen dogs do this is when they're excited. Some do it more than others, some never do it at all.

I think it's really cute. :D

Some dogs just chatter their teeth when they're excited. Going to the park, before feedings, smells female in heat, etc. etc. I've seen it quite a lot. It's not something I would be worried about at all.

If you youtube it, there should be lots of examples similar to yours.

But she has NEVER done this before. Since my last post she's done it 3 more times. Do dogs just suddenly start chattering their teeth both because their excited and for no reason at all?

I did youtube it and her mouth is more open than most of the dogs in the videos. Compared to Hailey, the dogs on youtube are experiencing mouth quivering, not teeth chattering...

Psyche just started doing it out of nowhere earlier this year. She used to do it a little bit before that, but she does it now enough that my mom noticed on the side lines after I put her in a stay before an agility run. She does it every time I put her in a start line stay, and if I have her toy and I snatch it away and ask her to stay, she'll do it.

She's probably just excited about something - hard to tell what sometimes!
