Took KC to the E-Vet today...woke up with him limping and his paw swollen to double the normal size. No broken bones just a nasty infection...possibly due to an allergic reaction.

His paw looks so icky and painful. Is there anything else I can do to help besides give him his pain meds and antibiotics? I've been icing to help with swelling...I just feel so bad for him... :(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Aaww, poor guy. Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon. I was going to suggest icing his paw. Only do it for 15-20 minutes at a time, tho. The only other thing I can think of is, if he'll let you, his paw up on a pillow.

My boss just had this problem with her little shih tzu mix after taking her to the beach. No limping but her pad was SO swollen and kind of crusty and gross looking. I thought it was a bee sting but it lasted like a week... she soaked in Epsom salt which took the swelling down.

I'm not sure...but it might. I don't know if epsom salt works the same as sea salt and table salt to kill infections, but usually salt does help with that.

thanks for the advice, it's working...KC's paw is much better today...still swollen but not nearly as bad as it was last night. It's amazing how my hyper golden boy will actually sit still long enough to soak his paw.
