I've given my puppy the pumpkin mixed with the Canidae and Iams puppy but his diarrhea still persists. How much pumpkin should I give? He is a 10 lb. old beagle. Should I add more Iams (cringe) to allow his stomach to adjust to the Canidae faster?

I would give him some probiotics....Probiacin Pet Gel or BeneBac Gel. You can find these on line and they really help with diarrhea and are safe. You could also try a little plain yogurt with live/active cultures. A good one is Cascade brand.

OR...give his system a break and don't give him anything to eat for 12 hours. You can give water or diluted gatorade (clear one) or pedialyte etc. Nothing to eat for 12 hours though and usually when you re-start with small amountd of food the diarrhea is gone.

I would also consider just giving dry canidae with no Iams. My dogs have the best stools when fed dry Canidae only.

Can I buy the probiotic supplement anywhere besides the internet?
Let me look for a moment and I will let you know. I am guessing at a feed store or pet supplier....be right back.

Couldn't find it at Petco or Petsmart. I would try a local feed store. I usually get it online and then have a whole bunch stocked up so if I need it I have it. It really works well.

I don't know if this would help or not but I thought I might throw it in just in case all else fails.
When Toby had diarrhea the vet said to boil some white rice and don't add anything to it such as salt, etc. Then boil some boneless chicken. Mix the two together.

just another thought here - sometimes diarrhea is caused by overfeeding. could it be you're giving him too much at once?

in regards to switching foods - i'd stop giving the iams and only feed canidae. the idea behind mixing foods for a few days is to avoid digestive problems, but since your pup has them already, there is really no point in continuing with the old food.

Mordy or anyone else, what do you think of NutriCal in a situation like that? I know they carry that at feed stores and Petco.

Nutrical is a caloric/energy supplement and wont help stop diarrhea. It will help get a dog that refuses to eat to eat and it also helps with stressful situations because it has a lot of vitamins and calories in it. A dog with diarrhea should not need this unless he/she is refusing to eat at all. It won't treat or help with the actual problem.

I use canned pumpkin too. Not the pie filling but actual 100% pumpkin. Also make sure it doesn't have any spices or anything on it.

Thank's Showpug...I use it for my bunnies if they are in G.I. Stasis to help out. Do you think though with the constant diarrhea that the pup may be lacking in the nutritional department? Would it not at least give him some extra "reserves" to draw upon? I know when I have that problem I feel completely whipped, it takes a lot out of me. Thank goodness it isn't a chronic problem or I would probably waste away to nothing.

By the way, you can get Probiotics at GNC or most vitamin or health food stores. Just use the human supplements. You'll get better quality and will usually pay less for it.

Yogurt worked best for me when Raika was little....We mixed it with her food and the breeder told us to let the food soak in warm water so it was softer and she got some water down to rehydrate. My cat's vet also recommends cottage cheese (Just a 1/4 cup or so a day...not too much).
