Remember when you were a first time dog owner or even back before you 'knew so much''....

Just 18 short years ago, and I was a trainer at the time, I was sure that breeding my backyard bred Chihuahua was a fantastic idea.
I even found a male and allowed an 'encounter', which thankfully didn't take.

I had no clue that breeding her would be such a horrible mistake, but my Vet. at the time clued me in... Until then, I was totally ignorant about the subject, not stupid.....just misinformed.

10-15 years ago, I was still doing muzzle grabs on dogs for various infractions. I was what was considered a well rounded and experienced trainer... Was I an idiot? No. I just didn't even know what I didn't know yet.

We were all 'ignorant' to some, many or all aspects of dogdom....until we knew better.

I think sometimes we all forget that....me included.

It wouldn't hurt to remember back when we didn't know 'so much' when trying to help someone new to learn.

Just sayin...

It's very true. But very hard. Depending on who you are talking to, it's impossible sometimes to try to educate without people taking offense... I'm guessing the reason we are still here to post is that we're probably some of the more open-minded people of the lot.

I think this is a great post. I know that I continue to learn as a trainer, and a dog owner. I know that if you talked to me a year ago I would have had some pretty different opinions about breeding than I do now. It's all about learning and growing!!

I'm talking many years ago now, but I can remember when I used to whack my dog with a newspaper when she did something I didn't like. Duh! Not that it had any affect on her whatsoever. Maybe that should have been a clue? Again, Duh!

I agree with all that you said. I have learned so much since I joined Chaz. We should all take a deep breath and think before responding to posts since we may have thought the same way at one time also and would have appreciated a helpful hand.

I remember when Flares came back into fashion and I thought they were a really good idea.. I was wrong!

We all make errors along the way, as long as we learn from them and help others to learn from them, then we're on the right path. ;)

We could all do with learning the lesson of "Forgiveness" from our dogs from time to time!

Good post! I have been a dog owner for all of 2 weeks, and man do I have a lot to learn! This place has an incredible wealth of information, and I plan on soaking up as much of it as I possibly can! I think you all are doing a pretty good job of helping out us newbies! So thanks to everyone here who is helping me and all the other newbies to become a better dog owner, it is much appreciated!
