Rofl, Renee, I can just picture an AKC judge's reaction to having a Fila in the ring.

In regards to meeting them.. I recently met a woman with an 18-month-old male Fila named Tonka.. WOW. He was a magnificent dog, and -so- polite. It was easy to see that he was just relishing all the attention he was getting -- such a ham! I'm not really sure if his temperament was "ideal", he didn't show any signs of wanting to eat me like several other Filas I'd met, I don't know if it's just because he was highly socialized and could tell a friendly acquaintance from someone who's 'trouble' or because he had a softer temperament.. Or if it was because we met in public where he didn't feel he had territory to protect. He just circled me and sniffed me, ate a treat I dropped for him and left me alone like "Meh, you're outta treats. You're boring." and went to check out Dakota.
He was a magnificent pup, but he played so rough! I thought he was going to squish Dakota a couple of times, LOL.
I really like the breed.. I don't think I have the right lifestyle for a Fila right now, but when I do, I'd love to add one to the family.

Sounds about right. A good Fila is pretty much indifferent to people who don't belong to to him/her when in neutral territory as long as you don't pose a threat to their people. And they do appreciate adoration as they truly believe it is their due

They're remarkable affable with other dogs and usually love to play.

I'll never forget the first time I met Gamble, Kharma's sire. Gary brought him out on a lead and he was just a PRESENCE. You could feel the power and potential menace radiating from him. It struck me like a fist that no person could hold him if he didn't allow it . . .

no, they are a fairly common breed nowadays - of course depending on your location, but they are more and more common all over the US! maybe 15-20 years ago they were rarer...

You must tell me about your Neapolitan Mastiff... :D
He's a big adorable goof ball!! The ultimate protector, comedian, best mate and companion all rolled into one!! Certainly not the breed for everyone but I love my boy to bits!! Here is a pic of him

He was just playing the comedian part as I was writing this...
He tricked my boyfriend into getting of the couch by pretending that he had to go out to the toilet and when my boyfriend got up to let him out he quickly ran back and stole his spot on the couch... you've gotta love him!! :D

That's so funny, Goober. Kharma does that to Shiva, but she has to do something more underhanded, like run to the bedroom window and bark or growl or pretend to have something to eat before Shiva will fall for it

I love Neos and I have never gotten meet one, nor have I ever met a Fila, which I would also love to meet. They are so regal looking. I just love the 'big dog' look. :)

 I love Neos! I was actually considering getting one! If none of you know what one looks like, in the Harry Potter movies, a neo plays Fang, Hagrid's dog. SO cute!

I can only say as a fila owner. One of the rare breeds, thank you to Renee. She has educated everyone about the beauty of the breed. I adore mine. He doesn't have the hard Fila attitude that is portrayed of this breed but he does show his fila signs. I do have to say on the softer side of the fila breeding. He is the only puppy I have ever had that will let my granddaughter climb on him. She can be rough(gammy does keep watch) she touches his toe nails, checks out his teeth, and she does check out every tooth, and climbs on him, everywhere on him. He loves it, and does not show any aggression towards her. She does share all of her food with him though. lol He adores her, She cannot go anywhere without him by her. He watches her constantly. There are not many puppies at 4 and 5 months that would put up with this. FILAS, youv'e got to love them.

Many Filas don't come into their temperaments until they start maturing - some as late as two years old. Shiva's like that, but being well socialized she has excellent manners when she's out in public. On the other hand, the first one we had, Buffy, had a hard, hard temperament from the moment she set foot on the farm and decided it was home. But they never show this temperament with family and those they recognize in their circle of friends - two or four legged. You will not find a more loving, dependable family member than a well-bred Fila. And they are totally foolish over children, lol! No grandparent could be more doting or put up with more ;)

American Hairless Terriers - The breed for us :)

Due to our child's allergies, we never thought we'd find a dog that we could have. We tried the supposedly hypo-allergenic breeds, but...with no luck. One day, we happened on a magazine article which mentioned the hairless breeds, in particular the Mexican Hairless (Xolo), the Chinese Crested and the American Hairless Terrier. Well, our daughter was still allergic to the Xolo...and to the Chinese Crested, but, luckily for us, she was NOT allergic to the American Hairless Terrier (aka AHT).

Here's a picture of one of ours...Evyl:

and a picture of another, Tagnon...with traditional spotted skin:

i have an anatolian shepherd. while not considered a "rare breed" because they are recognized by the AKC .... they certainly are an uncommon breed. and i hope they remain that way.
