My mom lives in a tiny blink-and-you've-missed-it town. She has her horse with another horse on a farm and the owners of the property have this dog - and akita/ GSD mix.... and she is 9 months old and just came into heat.
The people who own the dog didn't know this... my mom had to TELL them this is what the bleeding was.

Anyway, they didn't spay the dog obviously... and don't want puppies but the dog has ZERO manners and so they don't want her in the house. They are scared some other dog is going to get on their property and mate with her and have puppies.

My question is: how long should they keep her locked up so she doesn't accidentally breed? I found some info on GSDs but not on Akitas and I told my mom that it should be about 7-14 days from now that she'd be accepting... and so, that's when they should be careful with her. I figured though that some of you guys might know better.

I told her make sure to push that they SPAY her. But any info you guys have for now is good.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

The problem is that with the dog apparently outside, who knows how long it took for them to even notice she was in season. Hopefully, it's not already too late.

If it truly were the very beginning of her season, I would keep her completely supervised for 4 whole weeks. That's what I do. Better safe than sorry.

I agree nothing less than 30 days to keep her safe AND it is not umcommon for some girls to ovulate and stand within 48 hrs of coming into heat, so forget the watching her later. Watch now.

Well, my thought is to watch her carefully...but in the event there's an OOPS...they could always do a very early pregnant spay?

I'm just hoping there are no pups.... these people DO NOT NEED PUPS. They also have a horse that my mom is helping to care for.... so, one dog and one horse that aren't properly cared for IMO... so please NO PUPPIES!!

NOT THREE WEEKS!!! I allow THIRTY DAYS, just like GW says.

I also agree.

While we can pinpoint the most fertile time(s) to breed and all that jazz, the truth is dogs are sneaky little creatures and defy human logic in terms of the "days they are most apt to breed and take".

Much like human females. We know when we ovulate it's the most fertile time to breed, eh have sex, but women can get pregnant any time during the cycle. That's the wonder of the body.
