So I'm in the process of finding an Australian Shepherd puppy. I have found 2 breeders that I like. One, has the color I would like more. The other has a structure that I like more, but doesn't have the color I want, and I like the breeder better. Would you choose the better structure or color?

Structure to me is more important than color, but there are so many other important things to consider. Do they have sites?

Color should be secondary to finding a good dog. May I ask which breeders you're looking at?

Structure. But so much more depends on which breeder you should go with. Do they have websites?

Go through your states breed clubs ..... not the internet . And as Herscel said there are many to be rescued .... those you will find through the breed clubs too .

Ok, next round of questions. What are you looking for in an Aussie? What color, sex, type of drive...what do you want to do with it?

Have you had Aussies before? Do you understand exactly what it means to have an Aussie puppy? :D :p Would you consider a slightly older (like around a year instead of 8 weeks) rescue since you seem to like one particular color so much?

I hope I'm not coming off coldly, I adore Aussies and know they're not for everyone, so I like to ask a lot of questions.

Ditto Zoom's questions. Also, have you considered going through an Aussie rescue?

I'm looking for an aussie for agility and a companion. I'm looking for a merle preferably. I don't care what sex it is. I want a dog who is very food and/or toy motivated. I want a dog who has the drive to please me and would enjoy agility with me.

Trust me, I know what I'm getting into. I've done a lot of research into them and many other dogs. I rescued an aussie from a bad situation for several years until he died after a battle with cancer.

My boyfriend isn't open to rescue unfortunately. He only wants a puppy and it to be well bred. He lives with me so he has a lot of say. It would be nice for me to get a rescue but he says no. There's no convincing him either. So I'm going with a breeder.

What's wrong with these breeders? Are these not reputable breeders? They do health tests, they show, they don't breed a lot either.

I haven't even had a chance to really look through the sites yet to be able to tell you. I recognize TwinCreek (just from seeing it in some show pedigrees) but not the other one. I'll get back to you with my opinions.

That's too bad about your boyfriend not being open to rescue. My Aussie is from rescue and you couldn't ask for a better dog.

So your BF's the one whose doing all the 2, 4, and 6AM potty breaks for the puppy? And socializing him every day? And puppy training classes?

I guess that's why I'm still single - I would NOT let my husband, much LESS my BF, tell me that I must get a well-bred puppy or no dog at all.

I am not an aussie person, so I can't speak to that. But, when picking a puppy for work, I am much more interested in drive and trainability than structure or color. But structure can have an influence and I wouldn't pick a puppy with a structural flaw likely to affect the work unless he had truly exceptional working ability. Color is pure aesthetics and does not affect the work, but if it's important to you, take the time to find a puppy from lines you like and with the color you want.

When you start thinking of what the puppies look like, think of Seabiscuit and what he accomplished with an "inferior" body and a superior heart.

I think for what you're looking for, Keepsake might be the better choice. TwinCreek has the color you want but something about them just doesn't sit quite right with me. I would also keep looking...maybe join (or at least look around) the official Aussie forum...they can help you a lot. Probably more than we can, because they know who is having what litter when and what's expected out of the cros.

Thanks :). I think I've been trying for the past 2 weeks to get approved for the Aussie Board but I can't get my membership activated :(.

Soemtimes you have to email them directly...it's a bit wonky at times. And they've been having technical issues.

There are plenty of Aussie puppies available in rescues. "Well bred" doesn't necessarily offer you any promise of agility potential, etc.

I think those of us that have experienced both sides can tell you that rescued dogs often show this incredible appreciation for their people. It's almost like they understand that you saved them.
