Place the palm of your hand under his chest, sliding your fingers down between his front legs holding that area safely.
Use your other hand to pick him up off the floor, holding his rear part.
Now you may place him on the table, chair, bed, or just to your chest if you plan to walk with him.

If I need a free hand i support the dog''s rump with my hip, have my arm around their torso, under their ribcage and my hand on their chest going through their front legs. This method is really only properly achievable by gals though, guys just dont have the required "hip action" to make it work LOL

I generally do what OC does. If it's a small dog or puppy, I support the dog via the length of my left arm, left hand under the dogs chest. Then if it's a small adult dog, i will drape their front paws over my right arm and just cradle them while they "lay" in my arms. I learned to do this with my first and second dogs - which were a lhasa apso and lhasa - poodle mix respectively. They felt a lot more secure and supported being held this way....

When all of mine were little pups they either got the double handed carry (one under chest, one under rump) or they got the one hand under rump and the top half of the body over my shoulder (if that makes any sense). This way they weren't going anywhere unless they squirmed alot...which, thank God, they didn't. :) There was also the one handed under the rump towards the stomach hold. Or the sit down and let 'em lay in your lap while holding them with one hand.:p

Depends on the size of the dog. I can pick up my 5lb Papillon with one hand on his chest, and just tuck him under my arm. with my Border Collie I have to slip one hand under his chest and one hand under his belly to carry him comfortably.

I have done all of the above. :D
There a many ways to hold a dog/pup correctly. The main thing is to have the dog feel comfortable and secure. And that would also depend alot on the dog.

As for the puking of water....... maybe a combination of the dog drinking too much and you holding him right after, with too much pressure on his internal organs causes this. If you need to hold him after a drink why not try cradiling him with both arms while he is in an upright position?

that really explains the puking because I give him as much water as he can take in (because isnt he thirsty?) and he slurps it down so fast.

as to the pic of "just don't hold em like this"

i tell ya i don't think he is hurting the dog..i think the dog is standing up and the guy is just holding on to his ears.. the ears are not pulled taunt, the dog's tail is in a happy pose not a pain one, his mouth line looks smiley too, and so are the people..that said...

puppies i always hold one hand under the behind and one on the chest of they are too big to cradle.
Adults if i had to lift them i like to do a basket hold which ends up with my arms about in the same place but with the dog in a standing position, not a slightly upright one.

"the guy" is former US President Lyndon Johnson who owned two beagles named Him and Her. Lyndon Johnson nearly destroyed his career when he picked up his beagle by the ears. Animal lovers around the world were outraged and Johnson’s popularity, still high at the time, took a dramatic drop and may have played a role in his subsequent actions and eventual inglorious political end. Mind you, he didn’t swing the beagle around by the ears. He merely lifted the animal – who was unperturbed – up on his hind legs.Who knows? If the dog had yelped, LBJ might have been impeached.
