It's called a crate. ;) I've never used one. I don't know about Shih Tzu's in particular, but I've observed that people seem to have more problems with housetraining small dogs than large ones. I have no idea why that might be, or if it is even valid. There are several very knowledgeable small dog owners here who can help you, and Brattina's been a big help to several members with their crate training questions.

Consistency is the key! The easiest way to house train a dog is not to let it happen in the first place (which hardly ever happens realisticly) :p I didn't have any harder of a problem house training either ST compared to any other breed of dog. Carly's 8mo and 'potty trained', but maybe its because I have her on a schedual (very important) and don't give her a chance to let it happen in the house.
Crate training is great because dogs naturally try not to soil in their den, to keep it clean. If you would like more specific info on crate training (or Shih Tzu's ;) ) feel free to pm me! Restrict the area the puppy can roam in freely if you can't be their to supervise (I keep Maddie and Carly in the kitchen when I'm not home; if you're only gone for a little bit you can crate him/her)
Make a routine and stick to it. Include feeding times (and quantities), outside potty breaks, play ect. Keep in mind how old the puppy is and how long the puppy can physically hold it because its not long in the begining!

For an easy way out you can borrow Maddie, who has practically trained Carly herself (instead of me) but unfortunatly I would have to go with Maddie, I'd miss her too much :D

I've used the training pad with Nora and her poops would be half on and half off. I just figured she couldn't tell where her butt was and actually thinking she was on the pad. LOL

Half the time though she wouldn't use it at all and end up sleeping on it

When you have a puppy, you need to take him/her out every 2 hours, stand out there with them of course and if he goes, praise the heck out of him and if he doesn't well, at least he's getting to know that that's the place to go. Also, no food or water after 6 or 7 pm. Puppies can't hold their bladder for a long period of time like an adult dog.

I used the crate method when Sadie was a puppy with the theory that usually dogs will not soil their "sleeping" area (WRONG), lol. Cleaning the crate was a pain in the arse. I ended up selling it to a friend and going with the traditional barracading in the kitchen.

Hi, congrats on your soon to be puppy! Shih tzu puppies are the cutest! You need to feed your puppy at least twice a day morning and evening. Our puppy trainer even said three times so if you go home for lunch time to let him out it would be good to feed him then too. You don't keep the water in the crate. Just let him have it after he eats, plays, or goes for walk. Gunner is still working on his potty training but he can hold it a while (but he's a lab puppy and I think the smaller dogs can't wait as long as their bladder is smaller). We had been taking him out on his leash to go and if he didn't go he would be put in his crate for a little while then taken back out. We take him out everytime he comes out of his crate and after he eats or plays. If he's in his crate and needs to potty he wines loudly so we know he needs to go out. The crate is great especially since now he's taken to jumping up on the couch and eating anything he finds. If we didn't keep him in his crate at night, I don't think much of the house would be left standing in the morning. Hahaha.

I believe the guide rule is that a puppy can hold it an hour for each month old they are so a 2 month old puppy can hold it for 2 hours, 3 month old can go for 3 hours, etc. If you have a neighbor that is home during the time you're at work maybe they can help you out and let the puppy out in the morning and afternoon for you and you can come home for lunch. That way the puppy would only have to wait two hours.

For treats, I have some small training treats-I think they are called train-me-treats. Gunner loves them and I can give him several which is great when doing training exercises. Several people in the puppy class use Authority treats for the training. He gets fed Canidae and so he gets some of their treats too. I bought some petco brand puppy biscuits but he won't touch them. He'll sit for them but won't eat them.

Don't forget to enroll in puppy training classs! It's a great way for you and your puppy to meet other people and dogs as well as teaching you how to train him effectively. Good luck with the puppy. :)

It might be a good idea also to plan on bringing the puppy home during a vaction week at work or on a Friday for the weekend at least. It will allow you to have at least 2 days of full contact with him and at puppy age, every minute counts lol Like young children, they do learn everything easier at that age.

Good Luck! I bet your anxious!

I have 3 puppy problems. One is posted on the health forum and I think the other fits here. I got 2 sister Chihuahua puppies. My first ever. They are very different. The one has recently started barking at everything. She will not shut up. She is beginning to get my other Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound to bark. When we are home we can tempt her inside and keep her in for awhile. Today when I went to work she started barking from the moment she woke up until i left and I'm sure beyond. People like to sleep in on saturday. I don't want to get reported. We have a bark collar but my husband says it is also triggered by banging into things. It is the advanced one so maybe I could turn it down. My IG puppy will lift his leg on things right in front of us. We can't let him out at all in the house unless he is being held. When they were all smaller he went on the pads nicely but since he started lifting his leg he is terrible. WJ
