Same as the Bouvier thread. Opinions/experiences/thoughts on the breed?

When I was looking for a dog breed before getting Izzy and Frodo I had narrowed it down to either a PWD or a corgi. My final decision was based on the size factor as well as hearing from many people that raising an adolesent PWD can be quite the challenge(the fact that PWD puppies usually cost between $1,200-1,500 also aided in the decision  :D )

I see lots of them around at agility trials and have had a couple in my classes. They seem to be very smart, and active. Goofy, and silly at times too. All the ones I have met are friendly and outgoing. Not much personal experience, but overall a dog I could see owning one day.

Thanks Dekka.

I've seen some at local agility trials as well, and there is a therapy one in my area, but other than that I have not met that many.

They kind of remind me of standard poodles with their personalities..

very bubbley, high energy, outgoing

Very sweet dog, I did show circuits with one last summer.

Thanks Summer, that's pretty much what I thought.

Noludoru, I don't like how they advertise pups on their site, but I definitally do like that they are very active with their dogs.

I talked to a few breeders before I got Izzy and Frodo so I would probably go to them first.

I'm not a sporting dog person. I much prefer herding dogs, but of all the sporting dogs, they are my favorite by far.

I love that they are smart, athletic, bubbly, friendly, versatile dogs. They also don't seem to have suffered from over breeding / bad breeding practices the way some of the more popular sporting dogs have.

I don't tend to like curly coats but I think the wavy coated portis are really cute.

You might want to take a look at Otterhounds too, PW :)
I have looked at them briefly in the past and my main concern would be that they are not normally a breed that is reliable off-leash. I don't have a fenced yard and I exercise my dogs every day, but it is mainly off-leash in unfenced fields or hiking through the woods.
If you don't mind my asking, what made you think of that breed for me?
(and I'm always open to more breed suggestions!)

Thanks Sam (long time, no see!), one of the reasns I do like them is because they are so versatile and I would be able to do some things that I'm not able to do with my corgis (for one I would LOVE to get involved in water work).

Although coat doesn't really matter to me that much, I prefer the curly coat. And I definitally prefer the retriever clip to the lion clip (there would be some freezing buns in the cold PA winter! :p)

Mainly just a hunch, PW ;) But there's the cold PA winters, which the Otterhound is well suited to, as well as being a somewhat sturdier dog that still has the same kinds of utilities as the PWDog that would also, I'd think, temperamentally mesh well with your Corgis. :)

There are definitally some nasty winters here (no Chinese Cresteds for me :D) but I think if a corgi can handle it (they love winter) then a PWD should be able to. But I can see what you mean about an Otterhound being sturdy.

I may look closer at the breed (as I still would be able to do agility and stuff with it) I just don't want to end up with a dog that has a tremendous amount of pent up energy. I did walk Frodo on a 50 foot lunge-line until he was reliable off-leash, but it's not quite the same as having them off-leash completely.

I have a friend that I've also petsit for that has PWD's, in fact her two males both have won breed in Westminster & Group and gone on to the final .

Anyhow, having been around hers, I have found they are VERY versatile, she does, obed, conformation, water sports and alot of agility. If they can do it, she'll do it with them..

At one point, she had a litter of 11 !! that I sat for, oh my gosh, that was quite an experience,,:)) Her's are all friendly with people, have good manners, and are reliable off leash.

No they aren't cheap, but I've found they are very "into" health testing and such, so if you find a reputable breeder, you'll have found one that does "everything" with their dogs and health tests as well..

Good luck in your search

I'd definitally rather spend a lot of money and have a healthy/tested dog, then pay less and get a BYB dog (although I have seen very, very few in this breed which is another thing I am very happy about).

Does she feed raw? That's another thing that I've found with this breed, the majority of breeders feed raw, which I really like.

We have a Portie and she is the most loving little girl. When we fist got her, she was six months and it was a little tricky to get her on the lead, but with training she is no problem at. I would recommend a Portie to anyone, they are smart, don't require an excessive amount of exercise and are overall healthy.
