On 9/30/13, Waldo weighed 52.9 lbs. and was estimated at about 7 years of age. His rescuer thought he had demodex (a genetic form of mange), but a microscopic examination of a veterinary skin scrape discounted that in favor of allergies. Waldo did, however, test positive for Erhlichia (E. Canis), Lyme disease, and hookworms and had a bad eye infection, plus a hernia protruding from his belly which had never been stitched up. Erhlichia is commonly referred to as tick fever because it is transmitted by the Brown Dog Tick if the tick has fed on an animal infected with Erhlichia. Erhlichia causes anemia and low blood platelets--preventing coagulation of the blood--and, sometimes, results in limping. Waldo was treated with 250 mg of the antibiotic Doxycycline twice a day for a month for the tick-transmitted diseases. The vet prescribed Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Ophthalmic Ointment twice a day in both eyes for two weeks to clear up Waldo's conjunctivitis (green mucoid discharge).
