I'm getting all 4 wisdom teeth out on tuesday and I feel like I'm on the verge of a breakdown. I'm so very scared I keep crying.
I have a horrid fear of all dental work, I think because I had a front tooth knocked out when I was younger and I'm so scared they are gonna hit it while I'm knocked out and it'll come out too.

Ugh I know Kathy29 just went through this, but anybody else with advice about recovery, and any helpful tips would be great!

are they going to put you under?

i am HORRIBLY dental phobic. i need to find somebody who'll put me all the way out for just routine stuff, because even with prescribed valium, i just can't do it.

but the wisdom teeth was not a really big deal because they gave me a happy little injection and i woke up afterwards with everything done and zero recollection of anything.

good luck!!

Honestly.. I had mine done and I was fine.

I HATE going to the dentist. Absolutely hate it!! I fear all things dentist. But when I got my wisdom teeth out, I was also out and didn't have to worry about anything at all.. I woke up, went home and spent a couple days nursing holes in my mouth and then I was fine!

You really shouldn't worry.. you'll be asleep!! :d Good luck!

I had it done, and I almost made my self sick beforehand because I was so nervous about it. After I went in and they gave me the drugs, it was over before I knew it. It felt like 2 minutes later they were waking me up. The only thing that was really bad for me was that I got sick later that night from the anesthesia and I involutarily spit afterwards which caused a dry socket. A dry socket is more pain than you can even imagine. I would prefer to get my teeth out again than to have another dry socket. It was this horrible aching pain through your whole head. So, just be very careful about getting a dry socket. Otherwise, it was not as bad as I thought it would be and I don't really remember much about it . My husband had it really bad bc his teeth were turned sideways and one side of his face swelled up like he had a soft ball in his mouth. I have a pic of it. His teeth were bad though because of the way they were turned. Mine were all impacted but they were facing the right way, and I only had 3 also. My biggest advice is be careful to not get a dry socket.

I don't have any advice sorry :(

My wisdom teeth aren't due to even be close to the surface for another 20years!

My mom had it done a few years ago, and the first few days were rough but they prescribed some pretty good drugs! LOL

You'll be under, you should be OK. :D

Just think, when their out you won't be any more pain at all!

I have only had my two upper wisdome teeth removed. The first one wasn't that bad, it was only one shot. The second one was 3 shots in the roof of my mouth. BUT, once the numbness kicked in it was smooooooth sailing. You'll come out, be numb and a little swollen, have gauze in your mouth and bleed a little. Don't smoke or eat anything for a couple of hours. Don't let any food get into the holes! That's a pain...literally. Tea bags can help the pain (don't know how, but they do) and aspirin is good AFTER you stop bleeding. No aspirin until you are clotted and no more blood, aspirin is a blood thinner (in case ya didn't know). You don't feel anything while they are pulling but depending on how deep the roots are you will know that they are tugging and you'll hear the drilling (if they have to make a hole to have something to grab onto to pull) and hear chipping and possibly see smoke. Don't worry though. It's really not that bad. I'm just giving you a heads up on what to expect. You WILL NOT feel anything as long as you are numb. Even when the numbness wears off afterwards you will still be pretty o.k. Just a little throbbing maybe. They might let you keep the teeth if you want to and should give you some pills to take for pain.

Ok...yours are a little different. Mine were already out and showing, yours will be cut out I'm assuming. You might have more pain afterwards, but you won't feel anything if you're going under.

I had all of my widsom teeth removed at once and I was awake for it. Aside from them hitting the nerve in a really bad way with the numbing medicine... and hearing them break the teeth as they yanked them out... it wasn't too bad. I didn't have much pain at all afterward. They gave me a prescription for percocet and I don't think I even had it filled.

I hated the blood taste in my mouth afterward and had to rinse my mouth out a lot. And I remember drooling a bit because my mouth was so numb. But I ate macaroni and cheese that night and it was soooo good.

And it didn't hurt when the stitches came out either. My biggest problem was running my tongue all up and through the dang stitches because as the swelling went down the stitches became loose. And I never even got the chipmunk cheeks everyone talks about.

Goodluck, and try not to worry yourself so much about this... it's not that big of a deal. You'll do a big sigh of relief when it's all done and over with and say "wow, it really wasn't quite as bad as I thought it was going to be"

I have had not one oral surgery, but TWO! I can tell you not to worry so much, it will be ok. The only thing that happened to me was a little sickness aftwards, but that only lasted a day. One thing, one of the side effects of anethesia is it can make you cry. I woke up from my first oral surgery in tears, and I didn't understand why. The nurses were like its ok, its just a side effect.

Just hang in there, you'll be fine! :)

Thanks guys, I had myself sick last night. Throwing up, the whole bit! It's awful waiting for this.
I just cant wait till it's all done and I never have to worry about it again!

I think I'm most worried because my sister get hers out and had 4 dry sockets and was miserable for a few weeks. I hope I have as good an experience as a few of you have.

You'll be fine during the extraction procedure but you'll experience some discomfort during the recovery period---it's just part of the natural healing process . Here's bestowing a SPEEDY recovery and I'll have a jar of Planter's cashews in your honor Tinaweena!!!

Eeeee, I feel your fear. I've had two teeth extracted this year and 1) there's no pain (well, maybe a twinge) during the extraction and 2) it is still an unpleasant experience involving cracking noises, drilling and the irrational but unshakeable sense that something WRONG is happening. If you can get knocked out for it, that's best.

About dry socket - if you follow all the directions (no sucking on straws, no spitting, and especially no smoking, etc.) you shouldn't get it. If you do, call your dentist immediately. They'll prescribe some packing for the area that should reduce the pain.

Good luck!

Thanks, yeah they are putting me to sleep for it. I'm just scared of the recovery, and that they may hit my front tooth in the process.
I know everybody goes through it, and I have no choice, but it just seems unfair. Stupid evolution!

I had all four of mine out a few years ago. I had just gotten my braces off after 2 years and then they discovered my wisdoms were coming in.

I was put under for my surgery too so that is the best part. They give ya a little needle in your hand (I had an IV for the anesthetic) and literally seconds after you are out. The Dr talked to me until I fell asleep but all I remember is him saying "Ok now you are going to feel a bit like your head is up in the clouds and everything is very quiet and peaceful." and then I was OUT lol.

The recovery sucks but you MUST follow their rules. If you follow their rules you shouldn't end up with any dry sockets. Really the worst part is getting used to the stitches (if you have to have any.) They feel so strange lol

most people truly don't have any complications at all. you'll be sooo happy when it's all over! my son didn't swell, and had no pain. my hubby had impacted widsom teeth cut out, and only took one Tylenol...slept a bit..and also no swelling, no pain. we'll all be thinking of you, so imagine we're all there. :) :)
