My cousin's dog just died so she adopted a new one. I dont know were she got it. She e-mailed me about him. He is an ex fighting pit. Incredably sweet. Yes she has the proper encloser for him andshe lives in a farm. Well the reason she e-mailed me is because she took him to a friend of her's who is a vet tech and she said he is a pit/wolf hybrid. How would this happen? Is it even posible? She's thinking of putting him down. Even thoug he is sweet, she doesnt want aything to happen to him or someone else.

It is possible but it's really not likely. How would a vet tech know that? That's VERY irresponsible to say the least. And why would it get put down? It's still the same dog.

I think your cousin could try to find a place that deals with hybrids I saw a zoo on a program that had dog/wolf hybrids.

First, don't panic. How did the friend know he's a wolf hybrid? Does she have any experience with wolf hybrids? What physical/temperament characteristics of the dog led her to that deduction? Many, many dogs are mistaken for wolf hybrids. Just because someone looks at the dog and says "hey, that's a wolf hybrid", doesn't mean he is. Zeus, my blackmouth cur, has been called a dane pup, a mastiff mix, an anatolian and a rhodesian ridgeback.

I don't see a reason to put the dog down because someone looked at him and thought he was a wolf hybrid. If your sister is happy with him, she should keep him.

Is she sure that it's not a shepherd/pit cross? Or even a husky/pitt X? There are a lot of dogs that have a wolfish cast to their features, so tell your sister to A) Get a second opinion from someone who would actually know and/or B) I'm sure there are wolf hybrid rescues, so start searching for one of those if she's too freaked out to keep the dog.

Most gentle dog in my neighborhood is a Husky/Wolf Hybrid. I have seen kids and small dogs run up to this dog and she is very gentle to all of them.

Unless that dog shows some particular signs of aggression then I wouldn't be paranoid and put it down.

Hey Im just sayin what she e-mailed me. She's a paranoid person. She is looking at all of her options. She doesnt want to put him down, but she has no experaince with wolf hybrids, so she's kind of scared.

I e-mailed her back and told her to take him to a qualified vet and ask their opinion. I also told her to contact some wolf hybrid breeders and talk to them. No I do not condone breeding wolves and dogs, but they would know more about the cross than I would.

She loves him so I dont think she would do anything rash. I will let you guys know when she e-mails me back and I try to get pics.

Please dont get mad at me. It's not MY dog. Im just stating what she told me. I understand that you guys are pationate about dogs, so I didnt take offence but just so you know it's not MINE.

We're not upset with you, Jenn :)

Most vets and vet techs are notoriously ignorant about breeds and mixes, and sad to say there are some vet techs out there who have the same problem a lot of other para-professionals have - they like to act like they have more knowledge than they really do. (And I say that not to offend any - I'm a paralegal and one of the things that really ticks me off with so many paralegals is how often they succumb to the temptation to try to be lawyers  )

Echo that, Renee. When Zeus was getting his neutering stitches removed, the vet tech told me that he was, without a doubt, a purebred anatolian.

I read on a wolf hybrid web site that its becoming a fad to breed wolves to pits, rotties, and mastiffs.

I think that she is officially an Idiot. She e-mailed me back saying he's not going to put him down. Wich is good not why she's an idiot. I really do love her.

Here's the story:

She has a HUGE heart and a local person knew she would do anything to help fighting pits. He TOTALY took advantage of her. He said that it was a pitbull/malamute cross that was going to be used as a bait dog. So she adopted it. They guy droped it off in her enclosure when she wasnt home and left. She hasnt been able to contact him since. GRRRR

Poor duke was cowering in her run when she got home. Here is a pic of him. Im starting to think he is a wolf cross, but I sure DONT see any pit in him. Let me know what you think.

She is taking him to a vet tomorrow

Thats the only pic for right now

Pit... Where? I am not going to say whether it's wolf or husky, because I am completely dumb on that issue.

Looks like a mal cross to me. With what is anyone's guess. GSD? Sibe? To my untrained and unprofessional eye, it does not look like a wolf hybrid. Paws too small, muzzle too blocky, something about the eyes...

Thank God he's safe. The whole "bait dog" thing just makes me sick :(

I don't think he's a wolf hybrid either. His personality sounds too "doggie", and he looks like a Mal to me. I'd say let his actions speak for him, not his looks.
