Hello, a friend of mine recommended this forum and well, here I am. I was surprised to see some familiar names from forums I used to post in.

As for my dog/kid, I have a Fila brasileiro male, just under two years. Overall he's pretty good as far as behaviour goes, with the small exception that he is leash reactive towards other dogs. We've been working on that for a little under a year now and we have seen a lot of improvement. Aside from that, he's a joy to be around, he's lovable and gentle with my wife, the cat and I, and he's an awesome guardian. He does tolerate strangers more than the average fila is suposed to, yet I wouldn't say it's safe for a stranger to walk into my house uninvited. Anyways, I look forward to learning from you guys and helping wherever I can.

Hey & welcome to Chaz! I'd love to hear more about your Fila. I have to say that of all the dogs I've met, Filas, as a breed, scare me. I know I shouldn't put all dogs of one breed in the same category but the only ones I've met have been poorly socialized & were in the hands of a person who I was not comfortable with. Please help me change my mind about your breed.

where are you all coming from?!?!?

Welcome. Filas are some gorgeous dogs, and an amazing breed (definately not for me).

Would love to see some pictures, and welcome to Chaz.

Thank you all. As far as the fila thing, there's a little bit of truth to both sides. It is a wonderful breed, there is no gentler dog with the people they know. That being said, with the people they don't know it's a completely different story. Since the very first day I got mine I started getting him used to new people, and it payed off, when he sees someone new, he'll act like any other dog, at worse, he wont let them pet him and he'll make it clear he doesn't want to be friends, and that has only happened a couple of times.

Granted, I looked for a breeder that wasn't breeding to the original standard as far as temperament goes, so in a sense my guy is a Fila-light. I have seen "old school" filas that I wouldn't go close to. What I noticed is that some breeders came to realize that breeding to the original brazilian standard as far as temperament goes, would be the greatest threat to the breed itself. Who really can keep a dog like that in check in an urban environment? If you have a farm on the other hand, well, I guess it would make sense.

here are some pics of my guy

Okay, so I'm not totally off base in my feelings about the 2 I met. I was definitely getting a bad feeling from them & gave them space. The scary thing was they were @ a doggie daycare.

Anyway, back to fawning over your boy. OMG! He's gorgeous! How do you keep from playing with those lippies all day long? ~L~
