neutralize the ¨dog¨smell?

Hi everyone,

I don´t mind it, or notice it, but my boyfriend complains that my house smells like dogs now with 2 Doberman mix 6 month pups. I bathe them about every two weeks, trying different shampoos, but he says they still ¨smell like dogs¨. Obviously they are dogs, but I was wondering if there´s something I can do to neutralize their doggy smell and for the house too. I do routine cleaning every day but that doesn´t seem to cut it...

Thanks for your advice.

what are you feeding them. Dogs tend to have more of a 'doggie odour' on the foods with the most fillers in them.

I'm feeding them Pedigree pup chow, lamb and rice. Sometimes I feed them veggies too. Is there anything in particular that would cause it that you know of?

The quality of food dogs eat determines a lot about the dogs' health. A good quality food will make their skin/coat healthier, help them in digestion, and make their mouths/teeth healthier, plus many other health-related factors. These three things have a huge impact on the "doggy smell," so feeding a good-quality food will certainly help with the dog smell. Unfortunately, Pedigree is a very low-quality food. You can look on the food section to find some suggestions of better foods to feed.

Absolutely this! Looks like a food change is in order.

I'd say it's the food. Pedigree is not even a medium-quality food.

Do you have a Costco near you? If you have a membership there, they sell a good food that is very inexpensive - it's called Kirkland and there is a lamb and rice formula and a chicken and rice formula. If you can afford to spend a bit more and don't have a Costco, Natural Balance, Nutro, Blue Buffalo, etc are decent foods - much better than Pedigree. Much much better.

Could be from your carpets .... try that Arm and Hammer powder .
Much more likely its the McJunky food. Pedigree is one of the lowest of the low when it comes to quality. If it is carpets etc.. I recommend a good enzymatic cleaner as it destroys odours by digesting them, vs covering them up.

I personally think you bathe them too much ;). Its not good for their skin to bathe them more than once a month.

And I also agree with the above, its your food that is causing them to have "doggy odor". We used to feed out dogs crappy beneful and they always smelled like dogs..but once we switched (To Kirkland) they don't smell at all and their coats are shinier and healthier.
