I grew up with Tibetan Mastiffs (still have 3 with my parents back home), so I have no problem with large dogs. Now I have two Dogo Argentino pups, and I want to purchase one more pup other than Dogo. I am thinking of Neomastiff / Cane Corso/ Fila, I like them all, but my situation only allow one of them. What do you think? Which one should I get? Thank you for your suggestion.

When Charley and I were making final plans for our first Fila, I did quite a bit of reading on the Tibetan, and they seem to share quite a few traits. Of course, a Tibetan in East Tennessee would really be cruel, as it never gets terribly cold here, and the summers are hot and muggy, so Fila it was. If I lived somewhere cold I would so want a Tibetan though!

A Fila could be an excellent addition to your family, and as a breed they do tend to be exceptionally good with other dogs.

But they are sooo eccentric, lol!

Thank you, Renee
I live in Toronto, Canada. It's kind of cold here, but I think it's still too warm for TM. it's why I want to have dogs with short hair.

Filarotten, Buckshot and I all have Filas . . . and all sorts of Fila stories, lol! They are exceedingly strange Beasties - but once you've been owned by one you can't imagine life without at least one.

If you don't have a problem with occasional public humiliation, and a dog with ocd, get a Fila. :D
I researched all of the mastiff's when I was considering a new puppy. The CC's and the neo's had to much possible dog aggression for me. I wanted one that would get along well with my Rottie and my shiz-mix. The Fila won. I wouldn't trade him for the world. I just not sure what world he is from. lol Renee, and I, are convinced they really are aliens.:D

Don't you tantalize me:D :D :D I want my Fila TODAY!!!
you people just love your Filas, eh?

It's good to know that Filas have less dog aggression, but how about aggression toward strongers?
I just read this: " you cann't socialize a Fila to like people, you can obedience train them so that you are in control, but you cannot socialize them to like people. A Fila WILL attack a stronger, Period. If they have to proper tempreament, they WILL.

Since Brutus just turned 10 mos. on the 7th I am not an expert on the Fila ojeriza yet, but I have been seeing changes in him for the last two months. He is starting to display signs of his ojeriza. He seems to have accepted certain friends of ours into his world along with his family. But, he is starting to get wary of strangers. IMO, you have to know your dogs body language I think that is the key. The Fila Bump is actually one of them, and as Renee has taught me, that Fila tail. It can tell you what is going on in that Fila brain. That, training and socialization are the key elements to owning a Fila. As well as love, good food, making up the bed so they can take a nap, not placing dishes from the dishwasher on the counter top, they must be put away at all times, being careful to not get attacked by the mixer... and Cookies!!!! :D :D :D
All of the above except the Fila OCD part, will help your fila understand different situations. They must know what is a threatening situation that needs them to react in a protective manner, versus a non threatening situation where it is not required.

It's not really that simple . . . when I've got a few more minutes I'll get you a good description, Orion :)

Ojeriza isn't so much a hatred as it is an unwillingness to trust and constant wariness. Hatred infers a measure of fear, and trust me, there is no fear in a well-bred Fila - that is one respect in which they closely resemble the Ovcharka! :) They regard strangers with disdain and distrust. Properly socialized, ojeriza doesn't turn into something active until a stranger does something threatening or sinister.

Renee can give you best info on this forum. She had and has adult Filas.

The one thing I can say for sure, they are not: crazed, lunging, killer, maniacs. It seems so many people have that impression of them because of their ojeriza.

They do require an experienced owner. They are not for a first time dog owner, the same as with many of the other Mastiff's and protective breeds.

the more info, the better
Be honest with you, "Aggressiveness" of a dog does not worry me at all, I can handle it. I just want to know, from a person who has or had Filas, what is good about this breed, and what is bad.

Julius Kennels, defines the velcro side of the Fila as this:
One last point to make. Filas are like Velcro. We have owned: Rottweilers, German Shepards, St. Bernards, Chow Chows, Cocker Spaniels and Huskys. We have never seen a breed of dog so enamored and obsessed with their human pack (family). They can be very needy dogs, prone to becoming depressed if the human members of the pack do not constantly stimulate and interact with the Fila. They are not dog to be left alone in a yard. They generally will wait by the door for the owners to come home and will hang on your every move. They believe, in their Fila minds, that they are entitled to all of the privileges available to humans. They become very attached and they are not very independent like for example: an Anatolian Shepard.
