I was a terrible nail biter as long as I could remember, and NOTHING ever made me stop... until I got my current job and every day I was/am elbows deep in cleaning supplies and nasty, nasty instrument cases owned by middle schoolers. Now I have really nice nails, except for one... which I apparently chewed off in a moment of stress a couple weeks ago and now I Can't. Leave. It. ALONE!!!
For me, though, it wasn't always just a stress reaction. Granted, stress could trigger it, but if I was bored I would also find my fingernails in my mouth for no reason. I voted for "only when stressed", because that is what usually causes me problems now... but in the past it was more of a "brain idling" sort of activity.
