So I usually feed my beagle once a day in the evenings. She usually gets treats throughout the day though when we work on training. But she will usually tell me in the evening when it is time for her to eat by putting her paw on her bowl and sitting next to it staring at the food container.

She has already had a few treats today, but here we are at 10 AM and she is telling me its time for supper....lol Scratch at the food container....paw at the bowl...sit and look all sad at mommy....lol Poor girl never gets nothing to eat....lol

She is an adult, almost 2 years old, and from everything I have read and vet and everything, adult dogs only need to be fed once a day, usually they prefer to eat in the evenings...plus like I said she gets treats throughout the day, she really is not starving, she is just being a beagle and wanting to eat all the time...

Well... I knew it was fine to feed once a day to an adult dog... I was just wondering if it was preference or not :)

I think its fine...but I prefer twice a day..it allows the dog to keep digesting throughout the day so to speak...if I feed once a day, my dog's stomach keeps making grumbling noises and I'm thinking..what the heck? That's not fair...

Its personal preference I guess.

Teddy only eats once a day. Usually even if I put the food in the dish in the morning he will not eat it until the evening. He is great that way. He also won't gorge himself. He eats the recommended amount and then usually will not eat anymore. But he gets A LOT of milk bones during the day lol.

In the summer he usually won't eat until late at night when it cools down a bit

Mojo gets fed once a day usually... but he tends to hoard his food and will nibble on it through out the day. Today he scarfed it all down in 5 minutes, so I'm thinking I may give him a little more food tonight as well as work on his training. We kind of flow like this... if he doesn't act very hungry he gets fed once, if he's a little bit more "needy" it's twice... all depends. Hopefully this isn't a truely terrible way to treat my beloved dog.

Same here with Otto, I try to feed him in the morning and he finally gets around to eating later at night.

My terrier mix sometimes goes over to the dog food bin and nudges it with her nose and then stares at me. Usually when I'm late on feeding them.

twice a day for mine..if mary could eat only once a day it would ruin her life for her..and it takes all day to get two cups of food down vic..he would never ever eat that much at one sitting..i have found my dogs to be way happier with their rations split up and fed half in the morning and half early afternoon.

I'm no dog expert, but from what I've read, small dogs should be fed twice a day, and large dogs only once per day.

But if I was only fed once a day; I'd hate it; so even when we had a German Shephard (now passed away), I always fed him morning and evening. He had porridge for breakfast and a dry biscuit and meat in the evening.

He had plenty of exercise and never had any weight problems.

Unless someone someone can correct me, I think it's kinder to the dog to feed them twice per day.

Obviously overfeeding an animal is stupid; so I'm not advocating getting your dogs fat.

I have always been taught that with a bigger dog, it is better to feed 2X a day in order to reduce the chances of bloat.

I maybe wrong. Anybody back me up or tell me I am wrong?

What's 'bloat'?

I also advocate feeding dogs twice per day; no matter the size or what books I've read.

Just remember to use some 'portion controll'.

I think the book I read that recommended that small dogs should be fed twice per day and large dogs only once backed this up with something along the lines of, a small dogs metabolism requires two lots of feeds; because they're only small; where-as a large dog, similar to a wolf, would only normally get one feed per day; as if they were 'in the wild', and their metabolism is geared up to feed in this manner.

Or something like that; I'm sure you get the jist.
