I brought home this little bag of trouble a few months ago. He's 6 months old now, supposedly a purebread mini long hair dachshund, but he has no papers to prove it. Everything I can find about "long hairs" on the internet shows dogs with much longer hair than his. He's obviously not a short hair or a wire hair though. Is it normal to have one with this kind of hair? Is he really a "long hair"?

(don't let that innocent look fool you, he's planning something!)

I think on long and wire-haired breeds, it takes some time for the adult coat to come in. Correct me if I'm wrong on that!

He looks long. He will continue to get more coat as he matures. Looks pretty cute :D

He may not have hair as long as a show bred longhaired dachshund that you'll find pictures of online, but he's definitely a long haired one. It usually takes 18 months - 2 years for most breeds to come into full coat. The best way to try to guestimate how long his coat is going to be is by looking at his parents and their coat length.

Hehe, boatloads of trouble doxies are, be sure he can't get on top of the table.

He deffinatly looks like a longhair to me. Someone I know has a doxie/chi mix that has a long haired parent in there. It took a while before you could tell. I'd give it time.

Like others have said, he's definitely a longhaired Dachshund. LH Dachshunds usually take about 2 years (sometimes more for the males) for their coat to become full.

It also depends on what his lines are like..

usually males dont finish to get their "full" coat until they are around 1-2yrs of age for those little guys.

Because hes still a baby, I woudln't worry. He looks like a long haired variety.

Where did you get him from?

I know some breeds need at least 2 years for their proper coat to come in. If he's only 6 months, I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you get him used to grooming now. Trying it when his full coat comes in will be alot more effort and a lot less fun.

He looks like a "tweener" to me. They often come out of short to long hair breedings where puppies will sometimes get a poorer coat length due to there being a short haired parent.
