This was after some education about byb. They had a good ckc breeder they found and where going to wait until later on to get a dog. They then changed here minds about that breeder, did no like her as much and went looking for another breeder.

They found a bad byb and decided to go with her because they liked the way she treated the dogs and her manner :(

Here are the red flags that definatly tell me bad byb.

-- The breeder advertised the dogs before 8 weeks and said "opps" I advertised them to soon, they cannot be picked up until they are 8 weeks. (at least they are not giving them away at 6 weeks, but still)

-- The puppies will also not be given ANY shots. Why? She told my friend that someone had once told her that there vet would be doing the shots so she decided afer that not to give any of the puppies shots  Sure, but the truth is they don't have to pay that 50-100$ and she makes more profit on the dogs.

So now I am disapointed, but don't know them well enough to say any more. Even if it was a close frend what would you say after all the education they drop the good breeder and go to a byb who does not even give her puppies any shots?

Whats done is done....

Let it go and just try to help answer any questions they have now that the puppy is home....

I think that is what I am going to have to do, no point beating a dead horse. I tried.

We are meeting he puppy on saturday, and of course I am excited to meet him.

Its just discouraging though, if I cannot convince my friends how can I convince other people :(

Hmm. . .consider your approach and if it would be effective if situations were reversed. . .

Do they know the tendency of dogs to be rather unhealth when coming from a BYB? How much they have to pay for vet bills later might get them a bit more interested in your knowledge.

I could have been worse. Sounds like it wasn't too ugly of a situation. I used to work at a pet supply store. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that came in with 5 week old puppies. They bought them in Michigan, because it's illegal in my state to sell them before 8 weeks. One couple was told to feed their 4 week old pit puppy cat food and cows milk. They came in on a Sunday wanting to know why there new puppy was throwing up. Hmmm and Grrr

That is the main point I was trying to bring accross. I did not want to sound to pushy so I did not go much into the byb breeding and dog pupulation issue. I wanted to put it on a more personal level and discussed the health issues that could come up.

They said they looked at the dogs eyes and they looked good because that is one of the issues with the shih tzu breed, but I don't think its smart to just think and untrained eye can detect an issue in a puppy's eyes.

I don't think there's much you can say, especially if they are friends of yours. You told them what you know and informed them, and now what's done is done. Ultimately you will just make them feel bad if you bring up where they were purchased from and your friends can't do a thing about it now.

It may be frustrating that they didn't listen to you, but I think you just need to take comfort in knowing you tried.

My fiancee, whom I talk to about rescue work all the time, bought us a puppy from a kennel because he misunderstood what it was. I couldn't be mad at him for it or get on my soapbox which I tend to do sometimes.

Just because a breeder doesn't give their dogs shots doesn't necessarily mean that they are a bad breeder, a friend of mine who breeds Shelties believes in being holistic shes interested in finding less harmful alternatives to conventional medical treatments, and I applaud it... And 8 weeks is an alright age for letting a puppy go from its mother, it isn't the best age for socialization purposes, but they are fully weaned at that time.

I have read many ads in the local paper adveritsing purposely bred/ grosely over priced designer breed puppies for sale shots/dewclaws included, but does that make them good breeders?? Not in my books.

I believe in a holistic approach to vet care... but puppies need their shots. So many puppies die from parvo... puppies need vaccines. I have never heard of a good breeder skipping all vaccines.

Like you said, what's done is done.

Maybe when you go to visit them and the pup you could bring them a good book on raising a puppy. Kind of like a "welcome home pup" gift, then you could at least try to help them more without it seeming like you are lecturing them.

Alot of people just truly don't understand that a BYB even is. I remember the day when I didn't. I just figured I wanted to give a dog a home, and that was that.

Definitely don't approach them in a judgmental way. Give them your advice, but don't harp at them. People respond much better when given kind words, than if they are nagged at or scolded. Also, right now I would only give them advice on raising the puppy. They have made their choice about where to get their puppy and that is already done. Telling them that they made a wrong choice with their puppy is not only pointless, but it could also upset them.

I like the "welcoming home the puppy" gift idea. It allows you to give your advice and help in a non-threatening/lecturing way.

Smile, be polite about their new puppy and bring them a "baby" gift - "How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With." Rutherford & Neil. This book will help them in a lot of ways.

I agree with the others. What is done is done. You tried to educate them, they chose not to listen. As much as I hate to see people buy from a BYB, it's still their choice and ultimatley, their decision.

If you want to keep the friendship then be kind and helpful in regards to their new addition.

If they ask you directly what you think of the breeder then you can be honest.

Thank you for all the responses.

The gift Idea is a good one, but she already has a pretty good book on shih tzus, so I think I might get the guy some appropraite chews for a shih tzu or some other toy.

Of course no matter where I dog comes from they are cute, I just hope they do not run into health issues. I am also really thankful they took my advice and at least did not purchase from the pet store. They also listened to a lot of other advice, so I was not wasting my breath. To bad the first breeder did not click with them, but I tried!

I agree with the above but will add just one thing; there had to be a reason why your friends decided they didn't like the 'good' breeder. And if you don't like someone - for whatever reason - doing business with them becomes next to impossible. In spite of their choice to persue a pup from a BYB, it may have actually been the best decision for your friends based on the options available at that time, including when they wanted to get the puppy (NOTE: I'm not saying it was a right decision from any other standpoint).

At this point, the best thing you can do is be happy for them and advise them in other areas, should they want it.

Good luck to them and I hope their puppy is healthy and happy! :)
