Seems with every new generation there is more murder, violence, rape etc.,some music glamorizes gangs,so much sex and violence on the T.V etc...What does all this DO to the fragile young mind?? Everyday I try to visualize world peace, but can't see it in the future.
Most believe television is a reflection of society, but I believe society, mostly kids reflect what they see on T.V.,and so many adults(parents) are accepting this NOW as normal .
So is T.V. the "root" of the problem?,is it what "the viewer" that wants to see all this CRAP?,is it the viewers fault?,or is it part of a plan to cause chaos?

Some of the most violent places in the world don't have much in the way of tv, music glorifying gang life and so on...

What do you use as a scape goat there?

Hmm I saw this show 'Human Weapon' where they went to Burma/whatever and learned Muy Thai....they have an entire culture of fighting there..starting with young young boys...perhaps that's their scapegoat, it is very violent. Or perhaps humans simply NEED an outlet because we are a predatory, territorial species?

Interesting questions raised.

There has always been war and violence in other countrys, but society needs to strive for being peaceful and civil. And anything that erodes that goal should be looked at and curbed if possible.

Well as I see it... humans have killed each other for various reasons LONG before there was television.
They killed each other over money, power, religious reasons, freedoms and a list of other reasons.

In ancient Rome people gathered into amphitheatres to watch two men go at each other with sword and shield... sometimes that would be a fight to the death(not as often as is portrayed but it did still happen).
In england people would go to public exicutions to watch criminals be hanged, beheaded and stoned.
Almost every culture has taken slaves from a culture they believe to be beneath them, which they beat, raped, executed or worked to death.

These things happened without 50 Cent telling anybody to slap there ho or without UFC's mixed martial arts.

We have strove for peaceful society in the past... but it has typically been at the expense of somebody else.

Even tho history has always repeated it's self in the past, you would think in todays so-called civilized world it wouldn't have to.

T.V. could be a good thing if used to shape young minds in a good way.

Some of the most violent TV in the world is shown in Japan, and they have very low violent crime.

I suspect that in borderline cases, with people with mental problems, TV might make a difference. But most of the time its the surrounding society that determines violence, not our choices of entertainment.

You tread a dangerous path with that sort of thinking.
Your idea of what's good does not necesarily meet with the ideas of what others have as being a good thing.

The general principals like not killing other or stealing etc. hold true but where do you draw that line?
Some would advocate against violence towards animals, which is a very good thing... however then there would be others to step up to say that we should use television to teach people eating meat is wrong.

using television in the manner you suggest on a broad spectrum of society won't necesarily be good for society.

I don't think it is natural to a predatory, socially based, hierarchal creature to be non violent totally, or non territorial totally.

I don't want WWIII, but neither do I want a reenactment of the movie "Serenity"...

I know,it goes back to freedom of speech...but the line should be drawn at the freedom to do evil...and yes, who's to judge what is evil or not?

Really? I'd be all for getting heavily drugged if it involved Adam Baldwin;):D. You are my new favorite poster, just for mentioning it!

Exactly.

There is lots of "good" tv for young minds.........I don't know exactly HOW young you are talking about, but we live in the Chicago Channel viewing range and their PBS is GREAT for kids! It's on ALL day Mon-Fri

BUT............(big but) Parents have to make the choice on what they want for their children. We monitor what our kids watch. I don't think it should be the TV station owners, music producers, or ANY media that are responsible for raising ANYONE's kids.

On a side note........My husband's father (My Father in law) took all TV out of their house from the time my husband was about 4 until he was nearly out of the house. I am sure he felt much like you do about what was being put on the air.

You know what? My husband still managed to get paddled at school, grounded at home, etc......

NOW the same Dad that took TV out of the house has at least 3 TV's and a VERY large collection of DVDs for the grandkids, LOL........guess he figured out it really didn't matter as long as you guide what they watch.

I agree there is some good t.v. for kids...but the thing is not everyone is a responsable parent that monitor what they watch or listen to.The majority of parents, even the responsable ones are working all the time and don't have time.

Another bleeding heart trying to save the world....

T.V. is a reflection of what society wants to see. They make the shows that sell.

Want to stop it? PARENTS tell your kids NO.

Stop blaming others and take resonsibility for what you can control. Which in this case is your remote control. If you don't like what is on TV, DON'T WATCH IT.
