I would need a dog to hunt things down (some sort of small lurcher probably), then a dog to find and point prey, I'm presuming I have a rifle here. A small pointing breed would be good so I will stick with Brittanys because I know ours goes all day and doesn't require much food. That would be about all I need, I'm presuming one or the other would make a decent watch dog as a warning and I can shoot anyone who comes near. Anything bigger would require too much food and maybe not able to travel as easily.

I would love to have any of the large mastiff breeds, but the upkeep on them in a post apocalyptic world would be tough ( they are big and in turn will eat a lot!!!) so maybe something hardy like an ACD or a mix of that. it would have to be good off leash and QUIET, like not prone to barking.

Me personally the end of the world would take some getting used to (I like my central heating, TV cell phone etc ...) but if I HAD to live without those things? I would like to think I could. I know how to cook over a fire, I would even eat dog food if I had to. Shelter wouldnt be a problem, there would be no shortage of abandoned buildings and houses. I might not survive long, but I would definitely give it the old collage try ;)

When I worked at dog day care we played this game all the time, but with specific dogs!

I think I'd want a bernese - could use for draft work, pulling a cart or pack, protection or at least dissuasion. Or maybe instead of a berner, an aussie. Just a good all-around farm dog kind of dog, but I'd want something that could pull and probably something larger than an aussie. ACTUALLY. Rottie, I think. I'm gonna go with a rottie.

I'd probably also go with CAS, but would consider other large protective breeds. Neopolitan mastiff would probably be out because of health issues, but I'd consider a dog like one I knew once, very field-bred dog with way less wrinkles and generally healthier looking. Or, a friend has a neo mastiff X american bulldog.

And....I think probably a smaller dog that would be good at tracking? Or maybe a big bloodhound type dog.

So, my list is:

Rottweiler
Neopolitan Mastiff X American Bulldog (hopefully we can pick mixed breeds?)
Bloodhound

For pulling things people would be better off with a goat or two. Easier to feed and save your dog choices for other things.

I would try to get some chickens, a few goats, my few mid sized dogs for hunting, herding and protection. Depending on the type of apo I might try to get a horse or two before I found a spot to stay and defend. Horses could help plow and be good for transport. Goats are hardy, breed easily and fairly quickly and can be milked as well eaten. Plus goats are quite good at being small draft animals.

Am I the only one thinking that it would be better if you had no dogs considering dogs tend to be loud and attract attention. :p Especially if this is a zombie apocalypse (the first apocalypse that came to mind), sound attracts zombies, and if you had a protection dog, they would bite the zombie, and turn into a massive zombie dog. Not good lol.

Ever seen the movie "I Am Legend" with Will Smith? He has a GSD and that's pretty much exactly what happens. Haha

Though, I would LOVE to have a dog in the ZA (because thats the only apocalyptic scenario I can entertain for some reason LOL) I dont think I would be going around looking for a dog, but if one found me, that would be cool, and I would be like "lets team up and fight the apocalypse together!!!"

Malinois, malinois and a LGD. Two for protection, one for protection of my livestock when I have them, plus bonus for carrying things in a backpack.
