I broke one of my teeth off on Monday evening and it hurts sooooo bad!!! The dentist prescribed me some Vicodin and I took two yesterday when I got off work and broke out in hives alllll over!!:( I went to see the dentist today and he said that I need to have a root canal and a crown on this tooth to the tune of about $1600.00 which my insurance will pay nothing on, so I opted to have the tooth pulled out which really makes me sad!!!!:(:(:( I've always taken really good care of my teeth and have alot of money sunk into them so it makes me sick that I have to get on pulled. I've also had braces twice. Sorry....I just need to vent a bit. My appointment is at 11:00 this morning and he said he has to surgically remove the tooth which won't be pleasant!!! Wish me luck.

Good luck. Anything to do with teeth always seems to involve alot of pain. You are pretty brave to get it pulled too.

Thanks so much Scob!! I'm not sure about "brave" LOL ...it's more to do with "poor". I've missed alot of work lately and it's Christmas time, so I really don't have money to pay to have my tooth fixed, and dentist's now require payment in full so that's out!

Your welcome, I still think you are pretty brave to have it pulled out. Christmas time is a rough time on you pocket book.

:( THat sucks. Are you sure all dentists require payment in full? I know you can still find some that will allow payments here. That's really too bad. I'd be pretty sad too and I'm sorry you are in pain :(

Why won't your insurance cover it? That seems odd. Sad sad.

How did you break it?

I bit into a brownie and got a big chunk of tooth. :(

Yes...I'm positive! None of the dentists where I am will take payments on this sort of thing. I've even been going to my dentist for a long time and have always paid my bills.

I'm even double covered on dental insurance and neither of them cover crowns or root canals. It sucks!!!!!

I'll come back on line later and let you know how I'm doing...it could be quite entertaining for you all to as I will be on pain meds. LOL:D

Ouch. I had a tooth extracted last week and it wasn't pleasant at all. Not painful, but I was scared and it was nerve-wracking. Be sure to ask your dentist about dry socket, it's a complication that affects a small number of patients (from 1-5%), where the blood clot that should form in the space where the tooth was is lost or never forms, leaving the bone exposed to air. Which is, of course, extremely painful and is rumored to last about a week. I haven't had this, and am very grateful. Vicodin makes me very sick, so the dentist prescribed me Percocet this time, which worked beautifully.

Is there any way you could put a root canal/cap on a credit card or some other way? The only ways to fill in a missing tooth - bridges and implants - are both time-consuming and very expensive.

Either way, good luck and I hope you feel better in time for the holidays!

Ow . . . hate to hear that Dena. Just be sure to keep some Numbzit (like you put on teething babies' gums) or something like that around that you can put directly on the gum. It helps a lot while the pain meds kick in.

Well...it's over!!! It took the dentist two hours to get the tooth out!! OUCH!! Actually, it didn't really hurt that bad at the time...he had me numbed up really well...in fact...I'm still a little numb and it was over four hours ago. He gave me Percocet and did warn me about the dry socket. Thanks for all of the well wishes....I'm going to go put some ice on it.

if you have it pulled find out what your dentist charges for a permenent fake tooth in its place. it should be quite a bit cheaper. never had a root canal but know several people who have, from what I hear a root canal is almost more painfull than breaking the tooth.
good luck.

You have my sympathies! This said from a person who was dealt with the worst teeth on Earth. Broken teeth, teeth pulled are a way of life with me. :(
Root canals don't hurt...or at least I've never had one that did. What hurts is how much it costs! And no...I don't think any insurance covers crowns, which is why I always got the root canal and walked around with temp fillings until they gave out....and then had to have the **** teeth pulled!
Hope you're feeling better!

So true Pam...paying the bill is what hurts the most!!! OUCH!!! They don't prescribe Percocet for that either.LOL

I'm feeling much better this afternoon. I had trouble getting the bleeding to stop. I couldn't get it stopped until this morning. ICK!!! Nothing like swallowing blood all night long. I went through a whole bunch of guaze. Oh well...the worst is behind me now.

Thanks all...you're the best!!:)

Be careful, my friend got addicted to Percocet and used it daily for four years. A lot of it! You're not her but still.. if you don't know it's addictive - it is.

Hugs. Feel better.

they could perscribe you ultram or tramadol..works really well for me. I have face..jaw pain all the time..can't feel the difference between an ear infection and what i live with daily. The joint is right in front of your ear..and mine are messed up on both sides. Ice is always nice. YOu can take a ziplock baggie..mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water freeze them and it makes the very best ice pack..soft and able to conform to your face (know from experience) also colder then ice and last longer..can refreeze over and over again. do not have it on your face for more then 10 minutes tho..basic rule of thumb is 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.
