My sister and her boyfriend are getting a puppy in April. I'm going to see them this weekend, and I'd like to put together an (inexpensive!) gift basket. Any ideas for things to put in it? So far, I am going to try and get a fleece gingerbread man toy (our dog growing up had them and loved them, so it will bring back good memories :)), but I'm stuck for other ideas. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That sounds like a neat idea! Hmmmm. Maybe:

-A good puppy-training book
-Odor removing stuff, like Nature's Miracle (lots of it!)
-Nail clippers
-bitter apple spray
-chewies
-a clicker, if they'd like to try clicker training
-puppy shampoo

Without knowing what kind of dog they are getting, I totally recommend getting them a Furminator! They are pretty cheap on Amazon, at least for the moment. I think I paid around $20 for the medium sized one, My breeder demonstrated the thing on my dog and I was like "THAT is the coolest thing. EVAH!"

For a toy, how about a small Kong? Those are pretty much indestuctable, which is always a plus when dealing with puppies and those razor sharp teeth!

I've never done a puppy gift basket. Thats a neat idea.

The only times I've given someone puppy stuff is when they call to say "Uh, I just got a puppy, and NEED YOUR HELP!" *sigh*

I ALWAYS give puppy baskets. :) Haha. Even to people who I'm not that close to... just as an excuse to play with their puppy.

Generally, some good ideas are:

A puppy Kong.
Some Kong stuffing/cookies or a jar of natural peanut butter to stuff the Kong.
Puppy treats. (look for high quality soft treats, preferably mostly or all meat. Old Mother Hubbard makes good puppy cookies.)
Bully sticks/Lamb ears/Pig ears/Tendons/Chicken Jerky/SAFE chewies.
Toys. (good ones are made of canvas or durable material, ropes, teething rings, bouncy balls, etc)

Thanks everyone! I got a puppy kong, a small tennis ball, some puppy treats, and a plush toy like our do growing up had.

A gift certificate for an inhome visit from a good puppy trainer and if that is too $$$..........put together printed off material on how to raise a puppy for a puppy package.

Here at Chaz alone there is tons of excellent advice that could be printed off. Other websites include, Karen Pryor Clickertraining| dog training and cat training info, books, videos, events ,The American Dog Trainers Network also has some good articles.

Nothing In Life For Free would also be a great one to print off and give to them.

Material on positive reenforcement training, not luring. House training tips and articles, bite inhibition articles, play boundries etc.

That is so sweet! A cute card about the new arrival. Pink or blue wrapping paper with paws.
Maybe a puppy kindergarten class certificate. (could be expensive, so maybe for another time!)
Raising a Puppy You Can Live With book.
Cute collar
High quality treats, size and taste depending upon the dog, put these in a cute treat jar
Lots of toy options depending on breed
A nice bone or bully stick (depending on breed what sizes to get)
Maybe a cute fashion tag for the collar
