Hello,
my family and I just adopted a 6 month old saint bernard from our local humane society. my 4 year old named her MInnie mouse so we call her minnie! LOL But any way! they had the dog originally on this grocery store boughten cheap dog food and I knew that cant be good so I switched her to a food someone recommended, its called diamond brand large breed puppy dog food lamb and rice. anyone heard of that?? is that ok for a saint bernard?? also its been the second day sicne she has been throwing up. yesterday when she threw up I decided to change the food to the diamons stuff now and she is still throwing up but now is added by the runs. what should I do?? is this just cause of the new environment and the mixed new and old dog food?? please help!!

I would not go with Diamond, but that is my preference because back in december they got a batch of corn in the food that was toxic and killed several pets. Make sure you check the ingredients, it is best not to feed a dog food with corn as the main ingredient.

I recommend Nutro. That is what I use and what my trainer recommended. My dog's skin and coat has been much better on it. There are also several other brand I have heard people say were good I think Innova (is that right) and Candidae (sp?) are pretty popular on this forum.

When changing the food be sure to do it slowly. Mix in a little of the new with the older and add a little more and a little more until switching completely.

I dont know if the throwing up is caused by that or not. How long have you had her? Has she been to the vet? That is the first thing that should be done is a good vet check-up and shots if she has not had them yet. I would get her to a vet about the throwing up if she is doing it often.

Good advice.

I recommend Nutro.
Not so great advice. Nutro uses a lot of grains and inferior quality ingredients.

Good advice. Eagle Pack Lg. Breed puppy or Solid Gold WolfCub are two other good choices, just make sure that you are feeding a food designed for large breed puppies, otherwise you could end up with joint issues later in life because they grew too fast.

More good advice!

:) Welcome to the forum!

For the runs I would mix some canned pumpkin (not the pie filling, real pumpkin) in her food. It has helped a lot of people on chaz, and when katie gets a little run in her poo, it helps a lot. As far as food goes any holistic food is good. Look in the Dog Feeding/recipes forum, there are a lot of tips on healthy dog food.

Whenever you change foods suddenly, a dog will usually get the runs. Changing to a good quality dog food is a good idea. You can get more info on food in the Dog Food and Recipes section.

I'd love to see a pic of Minnie.

I just heard a great idea on one of the other posts...put some pedialyte in the water to help with dehydration. If she is vomitting and has diarrea, dehydration is something to be concerned about too. Let us know how she is.

I would stay away from Diamond as well.. and Nutro isn't the greatest either.. Canidae, Innova, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, and Flint River Ranch are all premium foods, but there are alot of others too.. Most of the premium brands are only sold at local pet stores and not Petsmart or Petco, but Petco does sell Natural Balance.

You need to feed her either a premium All Life Stages food, (which I feed my Saint Bernard) or a large breed formula. You just want to make sure that you DO not feed a regular puppy formula..

You need to get your photo hosted online somewhere, like Photobucket.com. Then copy the IMG link and paste it in the body of your post. Same goes with the signature, just go to edit signature and paste the IMG link to the photo in there.

You've got the link right, but now all you need to do is put
after each link and they will show up right in the page..

OOPS.. I just noticed that your URLs are not direct links to the pictures.. so it won't work.

At the right of your photo go to blog/links and choose the last set of code. It says for BBC/forums.
