WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? Does Spanky look like a neglect case to you? Does he look underweight? Ill treated and in need of TLC? NO! He's an active, healthy, happy dog who's treated well. Why the SPCA has any concern about him is beyond me.

I did my best to stay as polite as I possibly could but lord I started to get short with them by the end of it. Forgive me that my dogs are individuals and aren't built the same. Yes, Bandit is heavier than Spanky but he's also not near as active and has an easier time holding weight. My dogs get out for two hours every day to run their little hearts out. And you wonder why Spanky is a thin dog? He's not skin and bone. He's muscular. Explain to me how he'd have muscle mass if he was being starbed.

My dogs don't have worms. Call the vet and see for yourself. You have no right coming into my home and being a complete witch.

/ends rant

I feel better.

Django is the same way. He is harder than heck to keep weight on. My dad was freaked out that he was too skinny when he met him. This was AFTER I had seen my vet and asked HIM if he thought Django was underweight. HE didn't think so.

That's what I said. That he's always been skinny and no medical professional has ever expressed concern about him. Everything about looks like a well looked after dog. I am worried enough about my little dog and now I'm paranoid my other dog is going to get taken away.

Ungh.

Jerks! They didn't actually come inside did they? Because you do not have to let them unless they have a warrant. Next time i would just give them your vet's phone number and ask them to talk to him about their concerns.

Seriously though. One of my friends had a husky who was in perfect gorgeous trim athletic shape. Her neighbors constantly harrassed her about starving her dog, and constantly filed reports that she wasn't feeding her dog. Every time the officer came out he just shook his head and told her that most people are so used to seeing fat dogs they don't even recognize a healthy one.

It was raining and I said they were more than welcome to come in and look around if they were concerned about the way my dogs are being kept. I have nothing to hide. But jeez you could at least be polite about it.

Will they come and take your obese dog away? Because that's abuse too, is it not?

Jeeze, Paige. You are too polite. Not in a bad way, I guess. But so kind to let them in.

Who reported you...?

I don't think they should be able to take either one away, as long as the dog is being treated and seen by a vet. Anko was severely underweight for about two months after we adopted her. People probably thought we were horrible dog owners, but she came to us like that and it took some time to bring her back up to weight. A talk to the vet and someone would have found that out. Same case here, the dog is being monitored by a vet who says it's ok, so it's ok.

I completely agree.

Riley my 1 year old Collie is on the thin side. He eats plenty, but he is tall, and very active. He is 65 pounds, Aspen who is a good few inches shorter then him is 62 pounds...that gives you and idea on the differences.

A trainer was petting him one day and commented on his condition. She felt he was in perfect weight, and added that, 'you see so many overweight dogs, it is refreshing to see a healthy one.' She did make me feel better about him, as others have made 'skinny' comments on him.

People aren't use to fit healthy dogs anymore. The dog in your siggy looks perfectly healthy to me. Sorry you have to deal with this.

I was polite because I don't want to make their job any more difficult. I understand it's a hard job to do especially if you love animals. But it really annoyed me when she flat out said he looks like he doesn't eat.

Lol, you should hear what people say when they look at Virgo. Think of 99% of the Labs you've met and then look at one that has a tuck-up and muscles...

Sorry people are being jerkheads to you though.

Summer gets comments about how skinny she is too. all the time. Sorry, but she's fit and yes, I feed her. She eats like a pig.

When she was shaved she really showed how thin she was ^^

I get comments on how thin Orson is as well. People have actually asked if he is ill.......erm NO he just doesn't have extra weight hanging around. Phoebe is trim too but I never get comments on her weight, I don't know why

Some people are have no tact. One of my sons is very thin, but he eats like a horse. My own mother told me that he "looks like he has worms"...nice, huh? I WISH I had his metabolism.

People are so used to seeing overweight dogs that they think a healthy, muscled dog is starved.

I occasionally get asked about Kharma. She's lean. The way a working Fila is SUPPOSED to be.

Every now and then someone will say something about Tallulah, and then they see her flex against her lead, lol. Muscles bulging EVERYFREAKINGWHERE. Yah, you can still see some rib when she pulls, but she's come a long way from the starving refugee looking little waif she was from the parvo.

People are way to used to seeing fat, out of shape dogs.

They need to leave you the hell alone, Paige.

i never judge a dog until I've felt their sides, and usually I am nauseated from the fatness. I know a dog at it's proper weight when i feel one. (not sure if that last sentence made sense)

Like others have said people are to used to seeing over weight dogs.

People are always saying Blaze looks to fat to me. When he is dry, then when he is soaking wet like a drowned rat from swimming he looks to skinny. No he is a good weight, he is built like a tank thanks. People are rude and like to be "know it alls" when they have a 135lbs rotti or a 120lbs lab. and think those are good weights.

Shelby was an overweight honker and people were always saying I was lying about her being overweight. That it was only her hair. Then she was shaved and it exposed the true porker she was. Looks can be deceiving. From the looks of it Blaze doesn't look too fat at all. And I know what it's like having a dog with that much hair and I did have one who was very overweight. He looks good.

You can feel Spanky's ribs. He's a skinny dog. Always has been. I try to get him to eat. e only ate half his dinner to night much to my dismay. I nearly cried because I'm feeling over sensitive right now and don't want people to think I don't feed him. Bandit didn't even touch his dinner though so it may just be they helped themselves like they often do.

the more and more i hear about dog eating habits and body builds, the more and more i'm convinced that they are much like people. some people eat like a pig and are skinny as a rail, while others eat nothing and gain weight.

one of my cats is almost 18 years old, and I can't stand how thin he feels to the touch. He's 8 lbs like always but feels so thin.
