Dr2, I appreciate the gentler & more educational tone of your post.

You have recieved many good suggestions. I have to say though, I've noticed quite a bit of picking apart of those suggestions rather than any kind of appreciation.
I don't believe I've picked apart anyone's specific suggestions in this thread because the very purpose of my thread is to gather information without judgment. If I've done that, I apologize.

I *have* taken exception to those that have implied I'm abusing or neglecting Willie simply because I'm discussing things. I have never in my 50 year life abused any of my animals physically or mentally; the most they ever got was a slap on the butt for extreme behavoir, but I don't even do that anymore. I believe in mutually respectful relationships with my pets, and in allowing them their dignity (probably learned that from my cats).

Willie is a particularly difficult situation in that he came to me with absolutely no social skills or training in dealing with humans or other animals; AND he came to me as a young adult dog with already learned negative behavoirs. He's also not a timid or submissive dog, is guarded with a tendency to be moody, and has a very stubborn streak. His heart is good, tho, and his basic nature is very happy, which is why I decided to keep him. I believe he was probably pretty hurt, both physically & emotionally, with prior people - not to mention he was passed around like a hot potato and had 3 different names in just one month before I got him. I've worked very, very hard to stabilize & functionally socialize him without causing mistrust or any further damage to his psyche.

Dekka, what I've been doing for the last few months is the "bandaid" approach, but it's just not going to cut it for the long term when it comes to his biting. That's why I'm here to gather as much info as possible to figure out what to do.

Are you able to look into a good behaviouralist? I can see if I can find someone in your area if you would like. I think sometimes it is good to have a new set of eyes look at a problem.

And the issue is here, no one but you has actually *seen* the issue first hand.

if so send me a pm and I will see what I can do.

I actually had him scheduled to spend a week back in January with some recommended behavoirists about an hour from here, but I was uncomfortable with not being there to train with him as he was being trained - not to mention I wouldn't be there to make sure they weren't further damaging him.

I had another group recommended just recently by my vet - BarkBusters - but I haven't been able to afford it the last few months (that should be changing shortly).

I live in Anderson, SC, so if you can find & recommend someone here, that would be cool. :)

You're very wise not to use a board and train situation. Training is always about you and your dog, not the trainer and your dog.

I would ask BarkBusters what methods they use. They have an interal training program that goes against anything that I think you would find acceptable for your guy. They also charge an arm and a leg for what many consider cookie cutter methods. Such things growling in your dogs face, throwing bags filled with chains at their feet....used with EVERY dog that I've seen after BarkBusters guarantee failed.

Here's the only one that I could find in your area. A zip code would help me refine the search - I'm not recommending this gal but she's a listed member of APDT and you could chat with her and see if she'd be someone you'd feel comfortable with .

I haven't talked to BarkBusters yet, and it would be something I'd discuss with them. Thanks for that info on them, 'cus I'll be more cautious now. No matter what someone's credentials are, if I saw them mistreating him in any way, they'd be outta here. I know how fragile he really is.

Gotta tell ya, I've tried that growling back at him - he think's it's funny. :lol-sign: I playfully tease him about a few things, so he's developed quite a sense of humor.

My zip code is 29626. There's not a lot around here when it comes to animal services. I was trying to find a nutritionist for Pinkie a few months ago and the closest one was 2-3 hours away.

Hi;
I agree that correcting him wont fix the problem long term. I strongly agree that you should have him fully checked by a vet and also include a CERF exam.
The NILF is an excellent way of dealing with a dog like this.
Something that I teach all pups and dogs (including some very messed up aggressive rescue dogs) is to have a soft mouth. But you may have to wait until he is more reliable to do this.
The dog must be quiet and relaxed. In the beginning I don't train this during play or with other dogs around etc.
I start by nicely by putting a finger on the side of their mouth, when the pup/dog STARTS to open their mouth (nicely) or turns the mouth away. I click and reward. I progress to putting a finger in, always clicking and rewarding for having a soft mouth. With a high rate of C/R the pup/dog quickly figures it out. When they always give me a soft mouth with my fingers, hand, wrist, arm, toes, foot (c/r'ing!!), I then progress to some mild play and gentle tugging purposely putting my fingers or hands in the way and/or in their mouths. When they respond with a very soft mouth, they get HUGE JACKPOTS!!! Over time I esculate the play and the state of excitement. I have NEVER had a dog bite me, even by mistake with this method. The dogs have learned that the second they feel flesh to immediately go to a soft mouth. They also don't *mouth* me ( or others, or clothing) trying to get me to reward them.
For me this has worked very well to date. But I'll stress again, NOW may not be the correct time to introduce this method.
