Ugh I don't like it really. At that price anyone can buy a dog they are going to dump for whatever reason a day later :(

(I was referring for shelters with prices around $100... The local shelter is $60 for cats and $90 for dogs, and they got 180 returns this year...).

I think the price is right on, but I also think that screening should be intensified. My humane society never screened my house, I just filled out an application. I also think that there should be a sort of "test" or something that an owner-to-be needs to pass before being approved for a pet.

Yes and no. Some rescues are way too picky about who they give their dog to actually. But yes, the cheap places should really do more screening that just ask you if you own your house...

I don't know, I'm of mixed feelings about screenings. Is screening necessary? Definately. But, I can't help but think about how many good dog owners actually wouldn't pass some of the more intensive screenings out there. I know of several rescues in Austin that I wouldn't qualify to adopt from because I leave my dog alone for more than 4 hours a day. Think of the rescues that won't adopt to anyone without a fenced yard: you've just disqualified over half the dog owners in big cities, and I know you've disqualified several wonderful dog owners on this forum.

I think being a good dog owner is based a lot on your dedication, not on how big/small your house is or how much money you have.

When we adopted Shelby they really didn't even do much of a screening. They just filled out the adoption form and we paid them. Obviously they could tell we lived in a house but didn't even both to ask if we owned or rented the house. They did help us though when she became ill and set up a collection for her and everything. I guess when our friends adopted Maverick for us they had to show proof their yard was fenced in made a neuter contract with them and basically did everything short of running a credit and background check.

I had wanted to adopt a chinese crested from crest-care (the rescue), but their screening process was so extensive (interviews, questionaires, home visits) that I decided to go to a breeder. Toby was $800.

that price includes what is fair..shots, food, shelter, altering, if it was 300 a whole lot of people like me couldn't do it. I am a good dog owner too.

So far i think im on top :p

j/k.

I've seen Show quality dogs of my breed go for upwards of 5000-6000$ from good lines.

Than again, I saw one of the BEST specimens of Aboriginal dog of my breed go for free as a gift.

LOL Julie I've said ya'll before...and I'm a purebred Yankee!!!

I agree...just because a dog costs a lot and is from a breeder and is purebred doesn't mean it's a great dog. I've got three dogs - two mutts and one purebred - and they're all rescues, and they are the best dogs in the world. More than I could ever ask for. I'd rather rescue a mutt for fifty bucks than purchase a purebred for five thousand bucks.

Rocky was $300-- just the pure bred German shepherd that he is.

But with shots, vet check ups, dog supplies (food, bowls, treats, leashes, collars, etc.)-- much, much more.

Yeah but remember he refunded half so technically I paid $1500. It would have been $3000 had he just given the papers as promised but he thought he couldsave money and not bother registering the litter. I fought him and ended up getting money and the papers. Yukon is the only pup from that litter left, all the other ones were PTS due to aggressive behaviour. His last sister was owned by an ontario provinacil police officer and she bite him 300 stitches down his arm and a one way trip to the vet. I am very cautious with Yukon because the potential is there.
