This was at my lesson about two weeks ago, I got to ride my absolute favorite horse, the Thoroughbred Romeo!

(Ignore the poor picture quality, these were just taken by my mom with my point and shoot :p .)

Eww, my face looks disgusting in this one...lol!

The group:

I was a little upset, my mom decided she didn't feel like taking pictures of the jumping...the ones I was looking forward to most, lol.

Romeo is a looker :) I'm not much of a TB fan though lol I like my QHs, Apps and Paints hehe..

I used to teach riding lessons in Kingston! Been riding for approx. 15-16yrs now..

Make sure you sit more on your bum for position, it could just be that she took the picture at the wrong time too during his gait.

*sigh*.. I miss my horsey

Oh I do like Romeos sweet little face! I LOVE the pics, it looks like you were having so much fun ( well not looks, I know you were because you can't not when you are riding lol ;)).

I love seeing all these horse pics, it just makes me smile :D. (Personally I think we should have a horse sub forum :p )

They were jumping, so a forward/half seat is quite correct. ;) Also he looks quite on the forehand, so he would naturally pull you forwards..

He's a lovely boy... Strange that they would make him jump in a standing martingale though... Oh well, to each their own as they say ;)

Jumping rocks!! Been riding for ooooh 24 years now... And jumping for 90% of that! lol. Nothing on earth to beat it! :D

Very, very common over here. I constantly here the hunter/jumper folks say that the horses look "underdressed" without one, so they put them on even if their horses don't need it. A running martingale would be considered unconventional, and therefore penalized, in the hunter or equitation rings. Personally, my old hunter/eq horse never wore a martigale, and I think it looks better that way.

Anyway, I think you look fantastic in those pictures! Very apporopriate for that type of riding. And Romeo is an absolute cutie!

That area looks familiar. Is that Bartlett or Barrington?

Either way, nice shots!
Its actually Wayne, but what you see in the background is Barrington :).

Virginia- Us horsey folk should post more pictures, I'll try to get some if I go to my lesson tomorrow (I might have to go to a baseball game instead :( )

How extremely odd...

I would NEVER put a standing martingale on a jumper, in fact I don't think I have ever used one on any of my horses... *Thinks* Nope, I haven't.

I have never understood the concept of tying the front end down, when it in fact works against the poor horse not letting it do it's job correctly.. That's when you get frustrated horses, and then more frustrated riders. And rearers..

Running martingales are quite common here, but for a true hunter trial they should be snaffle mouthed and cavasson nosebanded. A breast plate is permitted.. But that's it.

I've never been into putting loads of leather on horses just for the sake of it, my horse is a bit loony (well... I think insane is probably a better way of describing it) , but I still hack her out in an eggbutt snaffle and cavasson noseband. At least I know if she does ever get TOO much I can add something a little stronger to give me a helping hand. ;)

The French are also obsessed with every bit and gadget that they can possibly fit onto their poor horses.. I cried when I saw a sweet little Welsh pony in an American gag snaffle with reins on the bottom rung, running and standing martingale, and breast plate!! :yikes: This pony was like a first off the lead rein and so incredibly sweet.. Makes me wonder sometimes.

Yup. Keep in mind a few things:

a)The horses aren't jumping "jumper" courses or jumper sized fences; it's not like they need a lot of freedom to step over a 2'6" fence.

b)The martingales are usually so loose, they wouldn't prevent the horse from using their neck anyway.

c)Nobody, and I mean nobody, is as into fashion trends and looking the part like the American hunters. If one top horse wears a standing, you can bet everybody down to short-stirrup is going to.

My beloved Boston went to the top equitation finals in the country with no martigale and a rubber pelham. At home, and the whole time I showed him, he downgraded to a rubber snaffle.

That little TB is super cute! I love his/her coloring (I forget if you said it was a mare or gelding) You guys look great together. Are you in a group lesson? I always though that would be fun but I've always done private. I rode hunters for a few years and will probably start again. I went to eventing for a while.

I didn't know there were sooo many horsey people on the forum! Woohoo, I belong to a cool horse forum, horsegroomingsupplies.com, It's fun. I have a 3 yr Oldenburg/TB mare that just went away for training in Los Angeles. For now I think I'm going to start leasing a really awesome Dutch Warmblood mare. We'll see if I can afford leasing AND full training for Cabaret.

Sush: Yup, I'm in a group lesson. It gets sort of annoying when the amount of people exceeds five though. Last night we had seven :(. So in an hour with seven people you don't get much jumping done.

Ughh. Yesterday I was on the slowest horse I have EVER ridden in my life. His name is Texas Red, Mr. Tex for short. If only he wasn't so darn cute, he's very hard to get mad at. I was having trouble keeping his head up, steering, legging, and occasional cropping all at the same time while going to jump. I have a few pics actually...

Another ugly face...

Unfortunately my mom didn't know how to turn the black and white off, but thats ok!

Those all look like nice horses. So every time you have a lesson you get assigned a different horse? Riding all those different horses will REALLY help your riding. Do you show at all?

Yup! There's a chalkboard right when you walk into the barn, and our name is next to one of the horses. We get used to so many different personalities and gaits.

Unfortunately our barn doesn't really participate in the large shows, so we just have tiny school shows. I do compete in those, and recently acquired my first blue ribbon on a horse named Blossom :D

Do you show?

Thats' awesome! Congrats :) I used to show pretty heavily in hunters all throughout high school and then when I started college I got so busy with other things that I just started riding for fun until I eventually sold my show horse and went horse-less for 4 years!

I started going through major withdrawls so I got myself a nice little 3 year old who now makes me question my sanity. I wanted to do her training by myself but I just don't have the time so she just left on vacation to sunny southern california for some edumacation :)

I loved showing though, it was alot of fun, especially spending so much time with horsey friends :) Out of towns were the most fun...jumping on hotel beds, continental breakfast fights...ahhh those were the days :)
