In my recent class I have a woman called Anne, with a shepherd named Zena. Zena was bought from a "guard dog trainer" (read:behavioural idiot, in most cases) and had sever aggression problems towards both humans and dogs.
She would snarl, snap and generally go into a frenzy at the end of her leash.
She had to wear a muzzle constantly as she had bitten two club members. However, these bites never penetrated as Zena had excellent bite inhibition.

Anne had been told that Zena should be put down, and was a danger to the commmunity and to herself. But Anne was as dependent on Zena as the dog was on her. They were inseperable, and Zena was the most gentle affectionate dog when she wanted to be, but Anne came to the club as a last hope.
Thank goodness she did. With extensive desensitization, reward based training and some serious changes in ANNE'S behaviour Zena now intiates patting by strangers she meets! Last week she was able to be cuddled and her feet handled by me and it was just a moment of indescribable joy. Anne had tears in her eyes and Zena shook my hand and licked my face.
Anne and Zena will soon be moving to papua new guinea, where Zena is to act as a protector, so, no more cuddling strangers!lol. We have taught her to bark and growl on command, now we just have to get her to stop wagging her tail so much!

How nice of you to call every dog trainer who trains protection dogs an idiot, in most cases

Now, Dmitri, Bridey did qualify that with "in most cases." You know yourself how many of those "behavioural idiots" there are out there, making it hard on people like you who are training dogs to be intelligently functioning creatures with a good sense of judgement and stable temper! Now honestly, wouldn't you really love to see THAT kind of trainer put out of business? ;)

I always believe in keeping the faith in the dog and always practicing positive training to show the dog the proper behavior (a new default)
You did a good job helping these people. Keep up the great work. ;)

I'm sorry if I offended you, but sadly my statements regarding guard dog trainers is basically true in the area I live in. There are about, three good ones out of HUNDREDS of bad ones. I'm always being called in to fix their mistakes, and a good number of the dogs they "train" end up on a one way trip to the vets office, or worse.

I would love to get Jake to that point! Maybe I need to start taking him to some classes rather than trying it on my own. He hasn't bitten anyone, and is a total joy with the family, but really nervous of strangers :(

Well, this woman needed alot more than just obedience classes. I did some private work with her as well to get Zena to that stage.
