I was with my ex and he found something wrong with EVERY house. We settled on a house that was completely refurbished by the city. It was the only one he liked, I liked a ton of other ones, most better than the house I am now stuck with.

We were looking at land to buy so we could build when my mom passed away. So then we were looking at houses with in-laws so dad could live with us. His house was solidly built, no water in basement, great foundation, school system was decent and taxes weren't too bad. We decided to buy his house and build an in-law addition. I love my house, not too big and so many little touches I love. Through the years my dad has done things all through the house that were unique and I just love them. He built me a spice rack right into the wall in my kitchen, things like that. I hate woodwork painted white, so the first thing I did when we moved in was to tear it all out and replace it with oak. We did it room by room so it wasn't expensive. The in-law has painted wood trim and I hate it, but dad lives there and he likes it. I am glad we decided to stay here, I know if I had built a house at the time, I would have gone with a huge house and regretted it now.

It was ridiculously low priced.

I still don't like it.. but we have a mortgage lower by quite a bit than rent would be.

Our house literally fell in our laps, and we couldn't turn it down. We weren't even actually looking for a house, we weren't going to start looking to buy a house until the fall of that year, and we had the house find us in Feb (I think...).

Matt and I had decided to go see a few open houses on that Sunday, just to get an idea how things are in the market. It was more just a lazy day to spend a Sunday, not house shopping at all. At another house the realtor had asked us if we'd seen a different house (now ours!), and we said only online, as there was no open house on this day, and we figured it was outside of our price range anyways. Before we knew it we had a viewing of the house that afternoon, and before we knew it we'd fallen in love.

A bit crazy, but it worked and we do love our home :)
