I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 14... I had a lot of complications with the surgery (and was in bed for like 6 days)... but it normally is a very very easy procedure. My fiancee had it done at the same age, and was up and about after he got home. That is how most people are.
I wouldn't freak out about it (I'm a hypochrondriac as well, lol), and would make a dentist appointment for whenever you can.

Before I had my wisdom teeth out, they were poking through a little bit and it felt like I had a hole in my gums. Mine were painful coming in. Most of the time dentists want you to have them removed. They can cause crowding with your other teeth and they can come in really crooked. I had 1 that were coming in straght, 1 that wasn't coming through yet and 2 that were sideways. I was put to sleep to have them out and I was good as new in a few days.

If what you have doesn't hurt, I wouldn't worry too much until you can get to a dentist. With my dentist if you have something going on extremly painful, they let you come in as soon as they open or right before closing for an emergency visit. Their appointments back up for months so emergencies get taken care of right away. Call your dentist and get in there as soon as you can. try not to worry so much.

I turned 21 in September. Is that the right age?

Will I need to take time off work to heal??

Do I have to wait until they grow in before removing them?

Maybe.

Yes.

No.

I had my wisdom teeth out YEARS ago. And I'm sorry, I was knocked out cold as mine had not yet come up and were impacted and causing me pain. I freak out when it comes to the dentist, so they wouldn't have been able to just give me a pain med to numb the area and yank my teeth out with me awake.

If you do decide to get knocked out for it, Dulce, I am close enough that I can give you a ride if you need. Nothing to worry about, but it's best to get them out before they cause any problems and an x-ray will show if there are any potential problems.

Good luck.

it's usually recommended they be removed because often they become impacted causing infection and worse. they are considered extra teeth that we don't need at this point, and as mentioned can cause other teeth to be crowded. the younger you are, the better. :) most oral surgeons can extract them as an office procedure. BUT...I do recommend an oral surgeon, not just a general dentist.

I talked about it with my dentist years ago when I was a kid, and she said that when/if they came up,. it'd jack up my teeth. :( I already have straight teeth without braces and can't tqake my chances, LOL

Wow - how odd... I know it's a running joke about Brits and their teeth, which is a crock of sh1t... but we don't have our wisdom teeth out unless there is a problem.... I think I might know one person who has had it done....

And my teeth are as straight as they come (never even had a brace ;) )

You poor thing! Don't worry, though, the procedure is no sweat. I had mine taken out in high school, and had no swelling and I didn't even use any of my pain meds afterwords. I'm from SoCal, so if you're from there I can recommend an awesome oral surgeon! Good luck at the dentist! :)

ugh, i thought the humor would have been more apparent, sorry if it truly was unappreciated.

surprising to see with so many responses that not one of you was born without any wisdom teeth, like myself. i know of some people that were only born with two, and have heard about someone who only had one.

I've got all four of my wisdom teeth and my dentist won't take them out. 3 of them don't bother me in the least, but the 4th one only came in half way and slightly crooked at that, so it's going to cause issues at some point.

I've got a stupidly high tolerance to novacaine, takes three times the amount of normal to make it work and it wears off in under an hour. I'm going to have to get knocked totally out and hope to God that general works differently than local. I'm terrified for ever having actual surgery.

Most peoples mouths aren't big enough to have wisdome teeth come in. The rest of the teeth get shifted around (impacted) to make room for the wisdom teeth. In some people it can be quite painful to have them come in if there isn't room. I had all 4 of mine taken out before they even came through the gum. The dentist had to put me under so he could cut into the gums and remove the teeth. It took about 2-3 days for me to really be able to get back to normal.

You know, with all this talk I think you guys have convinced me to try to get an appointment to get my wisdom teeth removed, lol (I only have 2, lucky me).

Dulce, I have no idea whatsoever what it could be, but keep us posted as soon as you can, it must be freaky.
