If you were getting a new puppy tomorrow, what would be your list of things to work on first?

(Yeah yeah my puppy want is pretty bad).

Following me around when off leash! Manners and tricks and even obedience commands don't matter to me unless the dog is able to be reliable off leash :) also recall!

I'm in for this thread.

And probably a down/wait. So far it seems the most useful in day to day life.

With my current puppy, one of the first things we worked on was "leave it". "Sit" was probably next, followed by "wait". Loose leash walking was started from the beginning.

And starting "leave it" from the beginning was really useful, when you consider how often puppies try to get into things. LOL! I'd call out "leave it!" and he'd immediately come bounding over to me. Brilliant. :)

Things I failed at doing right away:
No means no
Name
Touch/recall
Don't eat food off the table

Things I'm glad I taught early:
Play
Focus
Shaping is fun

He learned wait right away too (for the commercial) which has been a life saver. Still haven't taught a stay and he learned down when he was 5 months old.

Their name
Pee outside
Poop outside also
How to ride secure in a car
To wear a collar/leash
Trade games/not to resource guard
Socializing, new people = good

Basic obedience: sit, come, leave it, loose leash walking would be the first once actual training starts. Probably a target if I want to teach a lot of tricks or have a sports dog.

With Abrams it was:

Name recognition
Calm behavior = reward
Sit/stay, but mainly as a variation of impulse control
No means "knock off whatever the hell you're doing"
Handling = best thing ever
Off leash = not exciting
Door/car door darting = not cool
Toys are super special awesome when you share

Crate training and housebreaking are a given. ;)

Honestly, looking back, I wish I would have done more long down/settling work when in public. I don't think I did any of that at all, actually, and now I really, really wish I had.

But, for everything we worked on, really the only thing that isn't "good" is his handling skills (he is still worried about restraint, although at least isn't a terror about it like he probably would be had I not have worked with him on it) and how calm behaviors aren't well offered. Hahaha

First thing I taught Wilson that I would also teach any future puppies is name/recall/stick close by all kind of lumped together.

Ok, serious answer now:

Touch (And recall but those go hand in hand)
Mat
Perch
Shaping play
Focus
Off leash play
Build drive
Crate work
Mess around with shaping body awareness things like front feet on things, back feet on things and so on

Me being the most interesting thing when out in public. Taking the puppy to lots of places and playing with me there, getting rewarded for any sort of attention to me.
Recall
Touch
Settle
Crate
Handling (this is something I'm actually super proud of with Hugo. He's a dream at the vet!)
Leave it
Mat (place)

One thing I'll do with future puppy is not get overwhelmed with how fast I feel like I have to have started x,y,z. With Hugo I taught him like 15 things right away and just kept teaching instead of working on the 3 Ds. If I could have a redo, I would have spent more time on touch, leave it and focus with distractions and duration.

Toiletting is for outside

Your new owners are trustworthy and also fun!

Work on recall word and lots of reward when puppy is small and follows you anyway (every puppy class I have been to I mention I work on recalls from first day and there is always some pitying owner who gives me a condescending look and tells me THEIR 8 week old puppy already comes when called, they don't need to train it...ha. ha. hahahaha.)

Stays (mainly so I can take cute pics!).

House training, obviously.
Good recall
Sit
Good leash manners
With Dixie.. no chasing the cats. She knows not to and if I have to remind her she stops what she is doing and goes and does something else. I've made that strict ever since she was a puppy so she knows they are not meant to be chased. Sometimes she can't help herself but when I say no she stops.

I'd kind of lump attention/playing/name recognition/housebreaking all into one big category of "life skills" rather than something I really set out to train. They are obviously the big things that start right away.

As far as focused "training" - crate games, definitely. I used to roll my eyes at everyone who raved about it being the cure for everything, but after doing it with Gusto, it really was remarkable. First of all, any dog I own is going to need to learn to be good in a crate. And teaching self restraint, stays, sits, releases, drive, etc all at once, using just a crate? I'm in.

Yay now I have ideas :p

Things that I keep floating through my mind -
Engagement
Settling
Handling
Play! Anytime, anywhere
Crating
Perching/being on unsteady surfaces
Following a lure
Shaping

It all sounds so overwhelming all of a sudden :rofl1:
