Why do some dogs eyes "glow" different colors than others when light hits them? I'm talking about like at night when you shine a flashlight towards them.

For example, Khaki's eyes glow red. BH's eyes glow a greenish yellow.

Does it have something to do with the breeds?

The flash in my camera picked it up, here are the pics...

I* think it has to do with the colour of their eyes.

Hades has green/yellow eyes and rarely can I get a pic without them being red.

Roxy has dark brown eyes and they shine, yellowy for a lot of pics. I think it's the way the light from the flash reflects from the colour of their eyes.

Most dogs I've seen glow that yellowish green color. Khaki on the other hand, always is red. Not only when I take pics, but also in the sunlight or when she looks up at me when a light is on in the house. BH's is always the green color which seems to be the most common.

Okay, I found the answer. Here is a link to what I found....

Copied and pasted from the above link....

"Note: Some dogs lack pigment in their tapetum lucidum. In these individuals their “eyeshine” is red, as it is in humans."

Thanks for the responses.
Cool :) Thanks for posting that link :)

In Collies, the color of reflection is considered by some to be indicative of whether they are normal eyed (free of Collie Eye Anomaly). Most Collies have brown eyes (some merles have blue) but with the brown eyes, you'll get a yellow/green reflection in a normal eyed dog and red in an affected dog.

Pebbles eyes glow red and purple. Dantes eyes glow blue. I think its pretty cool! Pebs eyes are yellowish and dantes eyes are dark brown.
