A friend from my mother's group just posted an ad in the classified section of our forum asking for an English Mastiff puppy. She has convinced her husband to get one. She has a 3 year old daughter and has not owned a dog in her adult life. She has 2 cats also. She will probably buy the first one she finds nearby. Anyone know a good breeder near Buffalo, NY?

She'd be a LOT better off with an English. They're the easiest of the mastiffs -- a good beginner's mastiff. A novice owner -- especially one with a small child -- well, a Corso is a TERRIBLE choice.

That's good news! I'd say contact Jeannine (PlanetMolosser). She's near that area, I believe and should be able to give some good advice as to finding a good pup.

Maybe point her in the direction of a Newf or a Leonberger? I think these would be better choices for a family with a small child with little dog experience! A male mastiff can weigh over 200 pounds and even a breed as docile as an EM can still be a handful! Although I agree with Renee, an EM is a much better choice than a CC. Either way, explain to her the importance of health testing for giant breeds...when you get a heartbreak breed you want them to be as healthy as possible. Tell her to look at the Mastiff Club of America if she is still sure she wants one, NY has several good breeders.

Pam--you might even want to call Janine (her number is on her website)--I think she would be quicker to reach that way. :)

Well, she got her puppy. He is adorable and did well last night with letting her know he had to go outside.
The breeder told her he was 8 weeks old but when she got home and looked at his vet paperwork, she found out he is only 6.5 weeks old! EEK!
Also, she does not plan on neutering the dog because "if I pay a lot of money for a dog, I might as well get some money back".
She is not a bad person at all. She's a very sweet lady--just doesn't know a lot about dogs. And considering how I am getting my puppy, I can't really judge her either. It does upset me that the breeder lied about the puppy's age, though (likely because she knows it's illegal to sell before 8 weeks and just wanted the money faster).
I know she will love this dog and take good care of it, but I'm worried an intact male may be very difficult for them!
Any good resources about that I can show her?
