My parents moved us from the San Francisco Bay Area to Wilmington, NC., to east Tennessee . . . My life has been, since moving east, one continuous, "you're not from around here, are you," although I've gotten pretty good at camo, and Knoxville is a break.
Wilmington, when we were there, was totally the Old South and the question was always "where are your people from," or "are you related to Soandso?"
Weirdly, though, around Cocke County -- one of the places that outsiders have the worst perception of -- they're a helluva lot nicer and friendlier. They're more mountain types than traditional southerners though.
