What do you think about dog parks? Do think they are dangerous places? Or a nice way for your dog(s) to have fun?

Someone here posted their experience with a Dog Park and it seemed to be a wonderful idea, and only wished that I had a place like it for my two dogs. I'd love to be able to bring them to something like it. Unfortunately there is none where I am.

As long as people clean up after their dogs and are able to control their dogs, I think it's a great idea, especially for those who live in the city and don't have areas to let the dogs run.

I can't find anything wrong with them. I've never had the pleasure of taking dogs to a dog park (or even just a park) because Blackie is dog aggresive and Rose is really timid. But I think they are a good idea. I can see how they could be dangerous, but I can also see how they are helpful.

I like dog parks. If there was an out-of-control dog and/or owner I'd surely leave, but if everything was going smoothely I'd surely stay.

Dog parks a great way to socialize your dogs from a young age. But when that occasional agressive dog comes, it gets stupid.

I have never had the pleasure of going to a dog park considering i really don't need to go to one considering the room and amount of dogs i have they stay well exercised and socialized. But I do think there great I a friend Amy who lives in the city and takes her Golden Frank and BC Sassy to a dog park almost everyday and they love it there.

Woo..I'll be the evil one here and disagree...I cannot stand dog parks and refuse to go to one...alot of people think that its a great way to socialize your dog..but in many cases its the exact opposite...its a perfect place for fights to occur between both dogs and owners. Its very stressful for dogs that go into offleash parks because of all the strangers and the abundance of new butts to sniff...I've seen dogs in offleash parks hide in a corner of the fence and shiver...its complete nonesense to take your dog in there in that case...but the lady who owned the dog was just another lame example anyways..

Like I said before and I'll say it again...if you do take your dog to an offleash dog park please please be careful as I"ve seen some damaging events occur when alot of dogs are together OFFLEASH...and for those with pitbulls, please forget about dog parks altogether..its no place for a bullypup.

Thanx

Pitbulliest, it isn't a matter of being evil..it is good to hear all aspects of a free range dog park. All things are not for all dogs..I am happy to hear about the beach front and agility equipment. I think that would be a wonderful addition to shawnee..I just wanted to see what other parks are like and what other people had experienced there..at shwanee, most people bring their dog on the leash the first time, or until they can trust that it won't leave forever, if a dog is behaving in an objectionable manner they leave pretty quick. The park is for the Victor's of the world that just want to play and run. I could never let this dog run like the wind anywhere else, he hasn't a mean bone in his body, and this kind of park is heaven for him. I would like to travel one day and hope to visit other parks...Shawnee is one of the largest, at 54 or so acres. We only get to go once a week, but by golly this is a good dog for the next three days and sooooo happy. I would never try to convience anyone to do anything they were not sure about..only the owner knows if his dog is the type of personality to go. Finding water for a dog to play in is rough out here. We have lots of water, but it is full of broken bottles and fish hooks. My lab once had to have 80 stitches from a fish hook that caught and he just kept going with his retrieve. Here I can let them splash and try to dunk each other, race to the ball and have a great time.

Well ahve to say that if anyone has ever been to Oakland California there is the greatest place to take your dog. Right along SF bay. It's in a place called emmeryville and it is huge. Lots of places to run and run and run. Not fenced in but away from traffic. Rules about doggie behavior. Most lab owners go to the spot where they can let the dogs swim and retrieve. Sadly it was also the place where Laci Peterson's body was found and her son Conner's. Found by a dog owner that was near the water with their dog. But it is a wonderful enriching environment. My late dog Annie Bananas loved to play in the mud puddles. Only new of one dog that was not allowed to go there off leash. Most owners where regulars and many knew eachother and dogs.
Also had a space for hosing down doggies that where really smelly and muddy. So if anyone ever goes to N. California look this place up.

Ahh, Greentiger, you make me homesick! I grew up in Contra Costa County - my Dad was the airport engineer there at Buchanan Airfield and we used to grab a bag of Jack in the Box tacos and go to the airport and watch the planes. He'd take me up into the tower to visit. I loved it, especially when we'd go on Sunday afternoon. There was a stunt pilot who used it for his home airbase and he'd practice on Sundays. The guys in the tower would radio him when I was up there and he'd fly by and do stunts and rolls around the tower!

My sister takes her dogs to Golden Gate Park and they have a HUGE time, especially Braec, the Jack Russell. He just loves to play with the big doggies; his very best buddy is a Pit Bull Terrier, lol!

I think a hose for washing off is a super idea...we could all use a rinse after Brownie gets thru with us..will be muddy tomorrow which is a shame for I have to drive there, and since my car doesn't have plastic seats, I don't dare. I can just imagine what Vic would look like after a run in acres and acres of mud.
