Alpo is probably one of the worst dog foods you can feed.

"Corn, corn germ meal, meat and bone, soybean meal, beef tallow Preserved with mixed-tocopherols, animal digest, salt potassium chloride, beef and liver meal, dried cheese powder, dl-methionine, added color, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, vitamin e supplement, niacin, vitamin a supplement, calcium carbonate, copper sulfate, brewers dried yeast, calcium pantothenate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin b-12, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin d-3, riboflavin, calcium iodate, memadione sodium bisulfite complex, folic acid, biotin, and sodium selenite."

It's mostly made of indigestible grains and unidentifiable meat. Not things you want to feed to your dogs.

I never quite understood what "animal digest" is....

Dogs do love Alpo, it's definately made to be tasty. But they love other - healthy - foods as well.

lizzybeth -

Animal digest, as defined by AAFCO. YUCK.

Animal Digest - material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and un-decomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed.

I work at a pet hotel, and EVERY dog that eats Alpo has this gross, distinguishable odor to them... it is horrible. I can smell Alpo, and/or an Alpo fed dog, from afar! :p One of the grossest dog foods on the market with some of the nastiest ingredients, for sure.

Not to mention disgusting, frequent Alpo poops. YUCK!
