Does it bother anyone else when rap singers steal music?

I have to admit that it is weird to hear Rappers do covers of Rock songs. But thats because its well rock songs.......And I'll get tricked into thinking its the song and then someone starts rapping and im like "oh okay time to find a new song". I guess I just figure if its not broke don't fix it. But I generally don't like covers because no one can do it better then the original in my opinion.
GOOD POINT RIGHT HERE....

Naw, there's tons of songs out there that are better when they're covered.

Bob Dylan even said that Hendrix did a better job of "All Along..." than he did.

I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight must have been covered at least 30 times and each version is better than the original IMO. I really like Journey's version.

I think Foreigner did the original. Maybe Fleetwood.

Yeah i get your point and i agree with you, you are right, lots of other people use sampling.
But i only hate it when rappers do it, that may not sound right but thats how i feell. I also feel that everyone who samples should get permission, thats messed up if they dont.
there's another tricky thing... you only have to get "permission" if you are planning on making money off of the song. Permission is generally pretty expensive, and if you aren't making money off of the music, then it's not something you need to obtain. That's how cover bands are able to perform at bars or conventions.

The DJ who's website i linked, doesn't have any cds circulating of his hybrids, where he's gotten permission for mixing the two songs. He has cds out there that he has burned himself of his hybrids but they have been gifts to friends... but he does not make money off of his hybrids. He may play them at the clubs where he spins but other than that...? He mixes the songs to create new versions of art... and he's an awesome DJ to boot. He very rarely messes up melding songs into one another all the beats align so as to keep a dance floor jumping.

Another band i know here in Madison, called the Gothsicles, samples video game themes. They dont have permission for many of those themes either (i don't believe) but they still play at sci-fi cons, and local shows. They are also quite good, imho, but it's very much a fringe group... not for everyone... unless you like old video games and know what the Konami code is. ;)

heh, i think Johnny Cash has done many better covers than the original artists - Tom Petty's "I won't back down." or NIN's "Hurt." I love the Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner, and I could go on and on ... :)

Sigh, I'm a geek.
LOL! Almost! its up up down down left right left right b a select start! They have a whole song based on that... and when they perform they have old video games playing in the background. It's a fun show. :D

Johnny Cash did a cover of I Won't Back Down?

Or is I won't back down a cover?

Either way I'm gonna learn something new today...

Snap...there goes 8 bucks to hear the cover. I don't have that album yet.

But at least I know the rest of the songs will be good. I hate albums where I'm hitting the skip button more than the play button.

Very much agreed, Pixie! And what is even MORE exciting is another album of new material is coming out... American V comes out in July! I am so excited I love his American recordings. I can listen to American IV for days on end without ever hitting a skip button... *geeks out*

Blasting music is cool with me, just loud as can be with little bass, i do it all the time, i just dont like that thumpin rap stuff. I've been screamed at a few times by neighbors for being too loud lol.

Anyway, reading everyones posts has made me think about it alot more than had. I still hate it when rappers use good music, but now i also hate it when pop stars or any one else distastefully uses another persons song. There are some good cover songs, not a whole lot but there are some that i like. So i am definetly not saying i hate all sampling.... some people can do it respectfully.

Oh man, I LOVE woofers. I have a huge one in my room for dvds and music. Luckily, my neighbors are all college kids.:D

You wanna know who really pisses me off in the music industry? The Simpson sisters; Jessica and Ashlee. How the hell did they ever get so famous??

Yes he did a cover of "I won't back down" on his American III recording.
I read an interview with NIN where they said that they would no longer perform "Hurt" as it wasn't their song anymore, it belonged to Johnny Cash now. :)

Ever hear Cash's cover of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with Nick Cave?

One of my all time favorite covers is The Cowboy Junkies' cover of "Sweet Jane." Lou Reed even commented that their cover was the definitive version of it.

I dont just hate when rappers sample or cover songs, But I do hate when people take them and butcher them....Em used Aerosmith's Dream On, and it wasnt half bad. But I am not a rap fan at all. Especially not anymore, the new stuff is terrble....I used to listen to Em and Dre and stuff a lot more back in jr.high and early high school. I hate hearing people blast rap....if your going to get a system....use it for what its for good rock music...lol....except most people you can hear the crackling over the speakers before the music cuz they have crappy systems and think they are kool....

I now prefer instruments...the only thing i cannot stand is Opera. I hate opera...

I usually listen to rock, classic rock, classic country. I like some bluegrass and getting into a little jazz....I like music and I love to see people play. I like going to concerts to actually see the people play.

A lot of the stuff I like is because of the music....I sing the lyrics just cuz I like to sing (even though I suck) but I dont aways think the lyrics are wonderful....for instance Nickelback...Songs are good and catchy....and I have to admit to rocking out and singing them, but after they played here there was an article in the paper about a 10 year old girl's favorite song by them being Animals....

Anyways, thats a little off topic....

Thought I would add I cannot stand Jessica Simpson's These Boots are Made for Walking and I am appalled at Willie Nelson for going along with it...

And I hate when that Mark WIlls country singer tries to redo a bunch of songs like Back at One and that one by Brandy ....whats it called? Have You Ever? Or maybe it wasnt that one...either way...yeah I dont like him...

But I love Amy Lee doing Heart Shaped Box better than the original...everytime I hear it now I expect it to be her voice and when its not Im very disappointed.

I love that cover with Nick Cave. If I ever have children I will probably use it as a lullabye. As it stands now I sing it to Mojo when I'm tired enough to sing

Too bad it's illegal to kick in a car door. There'd be a lot of people with large woofers out their with my foot print in their doors.

People playing their music insanely loud seriously **** me off. Ya'll are being **** selfish by playing that **** so loud.

See? I am a responsible adult.

Hehehe you sound like my grandpa :p .

I like to listen to loud music but not so much in my car. It does annoy me though I admit when im at a red light and the car next to me is so loud and the bass is so bad I can just about feel the rumble in my feet. And like what was said before its annoying when others peoples music drowns out mine.
