Do you believe in tail docking and ear cropping? it is illegal in some parts of the world. Do you think its cruel? Im just interested in your opinions. Just imagine a dobe, rottie, boxer, min pin, and a cane corso with a long tail! lol

any difference?

I am new here so I had no idea that it had already been discussed. I beleive that docking and cropping is ok if it is done by a vet. human baby boys are circumcised so whats the difference?

There's a handy little button labeled "search" for just that reason.

There is a difference because circumcision has religious overtones and is a parental (or personal) choice and docking/cropping is more on the mandatory side because of show standards. It's very hard to buy a "natural" pup because of the time frame involved and there have been people turned down from breeders because they wanted a non-altered puppy. I think it may have been someone on here?

It can be hard for breeders to sell a un cropped or docked puppy.People are used to the look of the show dog so they dont really like them not looking the same as Breed Standard. If I had a male baby I wouldnt circumsise. My min pin is quite cute natural but not all like him that way.Now what pisses me off are cheap Breeders trying to save a buck by putting a elastic band onto tails and waiting for them to fall of once the blood circulation stops.

My fianceé and I are debating the circumcision question already and kids aren't in our future for at least another 5 years. We still have no idea which way we'll end up going. Yes, no or wait for the kid to make up his own mind?

it is a personal decision but I feel as long as it is properly cleaned its better off left alone. As for cropping and docking.I sold my Dobermans with tails done automatically.Ears were determined by Show or pet homes.I did have someone a friend who Wanted a pup with a natural tail but I said no if you decide to not keep him down the road I want the tail done so my coffee table doesnt get cleared daily lol.He didnt get a pup though as I am quite picky with where I sell my pups.

circumcision is worse...

I would never have my baby boy circumcised! The babies scream in pain when it is done. I saw a baby being circumcised on the internet and it was absolutely horrible. I think docking and cropping is ok because they are put under, before it is done.

I guess it's a matter of looks and preferance.....I just wonder who and why it was started in the beginning. Yes, cropped dogs do look regal for the show ring... but I like the God given natural look.. I once owned a boxer and cropped his ears...today I wouldn't do it. But then, I wouldn't do botox or plastic surgery either !! Not that I couldn't use it !! LOL!!!

My boy is cropped and if I ever had a baby boy he would be circumsized too! I got to help with the circumscisions when I was on the ob floor and it wasn't that bad. I just compared it to the ears. They cry a little but mostly becaue they are held down on that board. they are fine as soon as they get up from it. My cousins son had a problem with his bleeding but the whole time I was on the floor no one had any problems with theirs.

it is interesting to look at the numbers of cirumscisions and compare them to croppingor docking. They are going down now in a lot of areas and there are arguments pro and con about each. I don't know anyone that has had it done for a religioues reason. I always hear that they dont want them to feel different. I'm sure the numbers will keep dropping from what I heard at the hospital. A lot of people are getting how the anti cropping people are about it.

I have nothing against it. It's a choice of either the breeder or the owner whether they get it done or not and as long as it’s done by a veterinarian specialized in docking and cropping. I wonder at times why there's such a controversy about the whole thing when it's obvious that most of these dogs come from loving and caring homes. I think that there's enough truly abused dogs out there that would need that attention.

Why it was done...

I could be wrong about this but I think cropping used to be done on fighting dogs so their ears would not get tore during a fight. tail docking was done to prevent injury to the dog in the line of duty, just like dew claw removal.

Rottiegirl, that's a good link you've got there. Yes, time and time again, I've stated that the dogs' nervous systems are not complete at the time of docking and have stated those reasons. Tail banding is a perfectly viable way of docking...painless and no cutting at all. I know many reputable Doberman breeders who do it this way.

Ear cropping is also not a huge deal. There is some pain, but they are under anesthesia and within a couple days, their pain is past. This is cartilege (fewer nerve endings) and heals very, very quickly. The puppies are just fine and bouncing around biting at eachother the very next day.

There are viable reasons and health/safety benefits for cropping and docking on working/some hunting, some other breeds which can be found in links such as Rottiegirl's.

And it's so true what Giny said...that there is real abuse going on out there. How could anyone make a fuss about this? It's really not that big of a deal.

This has been talked about in previous threads and on lots of forums. But how would someone new know? Who checks a search everytime we have a question or topic? I sure don't think of it much. Hmmmm. Maybe I will another time. LOL.

I once owned a boxer and cropped his ears...today I wouldn't do it. But then, I wouldn't do botox or plastic surgery either !! Not that I couldn't use it !! LOL!!!
Bubb! You're too much. ROFLOL. I'd go for a whole face lift, eye job and more if I could afford it. LOL.
