On Friday my daughter had a swift and violent attack of gastroenteitis. She went down so fast, lost colour and strength before my eyes. It was very frightening. We got her to the main local clinic where she was on a drip for two hours.

To stop the vomiting they gave her Primperan but nothing to control the diarohea (sp) other than avoiding dairy, fatty foods etc.

She felt fine yesterday though my DH took her along to her own doctor just to let him look her over. She had by then started to develop a rash. The doc said the rash was related to the gastroenteritis, to stop all medicine and just continue to watch her diet carefully.

Well this morning she is one red rash from head to foot. I can practically see this thing spreading. It's not meningitis if the glass test can be trusted. There are no spots inside her mouth. The doc saw the rash yesterday but it was not like this.

Could either Primperan or gastroenteritis cause this kind of reaction?

Another thing. When they took her blood on Friday they used a very large piece of medical tape to attach the cotton wool. When I got that off there was an angry red rash just over her elbow, under the bandage. I don't know if that was the starting point or if that is unrelated.

For anyone with medical or kid experience does this sound like a normal reaction to you? :(

That doesn't sound normal to me. I would take her back to the doctor just to make sure everything is ok, or at least call him and tell him how much it spread and ask whether you should take her back in. It could be an allergic reaction. I hope she gets well soon!

Has she ever had bandaids on before? The rash under the medical tape sounds like a severe latex or adhesive reaction...I would take her back to her regular doc, since he's going to know her the best.

I hope she gets back to feeling better soon!

It doesn't sound normal to me either... however, if it were the medical tape, it would be in just the one spot, correct?

I believe that if it was the tape, it would have to be put all over her in order for her to have a rash like that... catch my drift? Contact dermatitus, I believe it is called. My mother had the same thing when she worked in textiles, and it wasn't a spreading rash, only on her hands (where she would touch newly dyed cloth and put it in the dryer).

I would take her into the doc or the ER immediately... I am almost sure there is some sort of topical treatments that can help, given that they know what it is.

I'd call the dr--or get her in quick--sounds like an allergic reaction which could easily go away, but just as easily get worse---you don't want to mess around with allergic reactions! Please let us know how you make out.

I'm so sorry she's having this hard time. It must be some allergy to something, I would guess or some other weird thing. I'd keep after the doctors till they figure it out. Maybe she should see an allergist. (?) Sending you and your daughter my thoughts and best wishes.

If the rash was caused by the tape it would be localized to that area. It isn't uncommon to have a rash with the symptoms you described. Did she have a fever? The symptoms sound somewhat like Scarlette Fever....I've seen a few cases in our hospital. I would definitely take her in again and have her looked at.

Thanks for your kind words everybody. Her rash has not died down but she does not seem sick at all. No more sickness, or runs, slight fever perhaps but other than that she's torturing her brother and me just the same as always. She's bounced right back from being the poor wee waif she was on Friday.

The rash also doesn't seem very itchy. I'm hesitant to take her back to the clinic because there are always coachloads of sick kids and adults there and you have to wait hours to be seen. Given that's she's just over something I'm not keen on exposing her to anything else. On the bright side though, my neighbour is a doctor so I've just kept both kids with me today and the doc will drop by when he comes home.

I had a terrible weekend until now. DH had an operation on Thursday. He was chucked out on Friday morning feeling no pain because of all the painkillers they'd pumped into him but they had put no dressing on his wound which if he was a golfer is a big enough hole for him to carry a spare golf ball or two right at the top of his bum! Course, when the painkillers wore off, he no longer felt like dancing the tango.

Back to see the nurse next day and he can't drive because he's in pain so had to go by bus - at rush hour - and the nurse asks him why he left the hospital before he got a dressing. Truth is he wasn't given a choice.

Then my poor baby came down with gastro on Friday morning and we had two hours of IV at the clinic. Then I got her malady on Sunday which thankfully only lasted the day. And now my poor girl looks like she's been rolling in poison ivy. :yikes:

Roll on the weekend. I can't wait to see what this one has in store.

That's what I thought, thanks for clearing that up for me!

Skye... is there anything else she could have gotten into? My oldest got into my cabinets in the wee hours of the morning and broke out the 409 cleaner, got it all over his arms and legs, and got small chemical burns.

it does sound like an allergic reaction type of rash. It wouldn't be from the tape, like others stated... it would have been localized to the area of the tape with maybe a little spreading to the surrounding area.. not her whole body.

I have seen viral rashes be scattered all over a kids body. How old is your daughter. Is the rash raised or have little pustles? Does she have this rash on the palms of her hands or the soles of her feet? You can try giving her some benedryl and see if that helps. But of course... check with your doctor first before giving her any medication.

Hi everyone,

Thanks you for taking the time to answer and showing your concern. My daughter has an allergic reaction to medicine but not the Pimperan. She had been given Augmentine earlier in the week by a differnt doctor which is amoxycillin and it is this which caused the reaction.

Strange though because the Ag was stopped on Friday and the skin reaction didn't start till Monday and it is still going strong. Still, the pediatrician is showing her no mercy and packing her back off to school tomorrow. :)hail: )

It all seems to have been a bit of a cock up to be honest but in a way i'd rather find out she was allergic to penicillin-type drugs this way than at a later stage when she had something more serious to fight.

Thanks again for all your good wishes. It helped.

glad you figured it out--you need to be real careful for the next time--make sure she stays away from the med( and any of the same family med.)in the future--the next reaction could be much worse!
