I currently have Max on Oven Baked Traditions but he doesn't seem to like it much and I have done some research and there seems to be a lot of better foods out there for the money.

I think I have it narrowed down between Canidae and Wellness. They aren't sold at the same place (unfortunately) but both locations aren't that out of the way for me and they look to be about the same price.

Which would you choose for a 4 month old Papillion?

We tried Wellness when Herschel was a puppy and he had explosive diarrhea. Apparently they've fixed their formulas now but I hesitate to go back.

After the Wellness fiasco we switched to Canidae and have had great results for both our Schnauzer mix (Herschel) and our Border Collie (Nala).

Both are high quality foods. Canidae is independently owned, Wellness is owned by Catterton Partners, an investment capital firm.

I dont trust Wellness anymore. They used to be a great company and I fed it to OC (before I got Ronan) but then they switched their formulas to lower-grade ingredients and the changes were obvious. His coat got a bit duller, he shed more during his coat blow and his energy wasnt the same. As soon as I switched kibbles again everything went back to normal.

We give Canidae All Life Stages to Strider. He LOVES it, and it is doing really well for him. Good stools, shiny fur, overall, just really healthy. He also stopped farting so much when we changed to Canidae (except when his tail is pulled).

The main reason I went with Canidae over Wellness (and a few other brands) is because they have a lot of different protein sources. My personal feelings are that it's very important for growing puppies to have access to a lot of different meat sources to get adequate carnitine/taurine for their developing muscles, especially their heart muscles. Any formula with strictly lamb or strictly chicken doesn't do it for us.

I know this thread is referencing dry but my dog threw up on 2 separate occassions immediately after feeding him Canidae Chicken and Rice (2 different cans). I had feed him Canidae without issue for 6 monthsn prior. I have since switched to Wellness canned but stayed with Canidae All Life dry. No issues since. Are Wellness canned formulas lower quality than Canidae? What other brands of canned are recommended. Also, what other dry brands are recommended as a backup in case the pet shop is out of the Canidae? I've read good comments about California Natural..Thanks!

I've never tried Canidae, but am about halfway through my first bag of Wellness Core. I will be pulling it out of my rotation after this as, for the first time ever, my dog has been very gassy (both ends) after eating. I've had a few other people tell me their dogs do great on the Core. So the moral of the story is, what works for your dog may not work for mine, and vise versa. Both are decent foods, so it may just take some trial and error to discover which your dog does better with.

I decided to give the Wellness Puppy a try. After he gets a little older I will move to Wellness Core as long as he does well with it. The stores that carry the Wellness are on the way home from work, whereas the store with the Canidae would have to be a special trip each time I needed it.

Thanks for the advice. I got a sample and Max seems to like it so far. Starting the transition this week.
