Does anyone here own a blind dog? A friend of mine just adopted a 100% blind 3 month old mixed pup. It is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time to see her trying to adapt. Anyone have any experiences, tips, recommendations, etc.?

I have two Shih Tzus that have 1 eye each. They can not judge things like to jump much but they do great. I have heard that blind dogs get along very well because they have better senses then humans do. I have not had a totally blind dog but my Miss Betty has a cataract on her one eye so in a sense she does have very limited sight. She follows us around just fine.

My neighbor has a blind pekingese. It only took her about a week to find her way around the house and to the back door to go out but that was a rough week! She was constantly running into things and then peeing on the floor. My neighbor said she just had to let her find her own way around by running into stuff, rather than trying to lead her to the door. That was the only way she was ever going to figure it out. Of course, this dog was already house trained so it wanted to find the door.

I had an Aussie who was blind from birth (double merle/lethal white). Nothing fazed him. He went at life full-tilt-boogie. He preferred being outdoors as much as possible, so we made an effort not to move things around or leave things out of place in the fenced yard where he had free run. The same thing holds true for indoors. Don't move the furniture around! :D

There will be bonked noses and accidents from time to time. Keep betadine and neosporin on hand ;) Other than that, let him be a dog. No one ever knew O'Riley was blind until he stood still long enough for them to see his face :)
