Well, that's how we refer to Tristan and his new boyfriend Calvin. After Tristan's best friend of several years moved on to a new barn, I was worried about finding him a new buddy; he's kind of a jerk with other horses and needs someone who puts up with him. Not only does Calvin put up with him, he actually gives it right back! They are turning into great friends.

It's been a really long, crappy year with the horse. He stopped eating late last winter, and his weight just kept dropping. Countless vet visits and tests and shipping him into the clinic, and I never got an answer. We've had moderate success getting his weight back on (at one point, he was over 200 lbs underweight, now he's maybe 50), and he's clearly feeling fine. I obsess over his feed tub daily though. I don't have any shots of him at his worst, because I was really afraid he wouldn't come around and I would lose him. But I took some shots today, and was relieved to see he's actually looking pretty good. Hopefully he will keep it up through the winter.

Venting/stressing over - Here are some fun shots of the boys!

Calvin showing Tristan his stallion impersonation.

Tristan looking impressive - that's about the most energy I've ever seen him put out!

The boys showing the behavioral differences between a Hanoverian and a Thoroughbred (they were spooking at a banging door). Tristan the Hanoverian - *ear twitch* "Huh? Did you hear that?" Calvin the Thoroughbred - *leaps to attention* "Holy crap, the world is caving it!"

how do you know what to feed horses? When I go to the feed stores and look through the horse feed it's like all greek to me. Is there like Innova, Canidae, and Eagle Pack of the horse food world too?

Tristan is handsome and I've always liked his name (my nephew has the same name).

Well, after almost 4 months on Purina Race Ready, he's decided he doesn't like it anymore, and suddenly is eating Nutrena SafeChoice (which I actually like better as a feed). So, he gets a quart of that for breakfast, with 3 oz. of oil. When I get there in the afternoon, he gets a hot mash of 1 quart Hay Stretcher, with a cup of ricebran, 3 oz. flaxseed, and Accel (vitamins and minerals). Dinner, 2 quarts SafeChoice, 3 oz. oil, 1/2 cup rice bran, 2 oz. flax, and Source Weight Gain. Night check, 1 qt. Safe Choice, 1 qt. Hay Stretcher. He generally eats all but a few handfuls of it.

how do you know what to feed horses?
It's just like dog food - everyone has a different opinion, and it changes constantly with more research;). The current trend is to feed high fat, high fiber, low starch feeds. They've discovered in recent years that a fair number of horses have a metabolic disorder that makes it hard for them to digest sugars. I used to be oh-so-careful, and had Tristan on a carefully researched diet. Now I just beg feed companies for free samples, and give him whatever he is willing to eat!

Thank you for all the nice comments - I will forward them to Tristan, who is incredibly vain and loves hearing stuff like that!

not to hijack the thread but I was wondering what the authentic diet for horses is. I know the authentic diet for dogs and cats is raw meat and bones etc.

grasses, roughage pretty much what most people feed their horses.

ANd you need to post more pics of these two. I miss being around horses :( but where im at its not easy and i cant have one right now. Im not supposed to ride, schools starting and im gonna have a new baby in Feb. March so i have to do my horse living from you.

Do they sell Seminole feed anywhere else besides down here in the South??? THats what i always fed and usually a preformance diet. Rangers had alot of vitamins, mash and oils.

How did you get the leaves on his leg? Or is he just really good about standing still? LOL. Ranger woulda done been sick of it by half of the first one.

Well, the natural diet for horses, as dc16 pointed out, is nearly all grass, with some legumes (alfalfa and clover). Horses really should spend 18+ hours a day eating a low-to-moderate quality forage.

But of course, humans screw around with things. We breed horses for increased athletic abilities, so they have a higher metabolism than a wild horse. We work them harder than wild horses work as well. The hay and pasture we grow for them is, most often, far richer and higher quality than the scrub a wild horse would be eating.

Horse people certainly are trying to get back to a more natural feeding schedule for their horses. Now that we are aware of just how common issues like ulcers are in horses (often caused by too much sugar/not enough forage), it's clear how bad some of the diet choices we've made for them over the years is. But we still have these high-performance animals who simply can not maintain their weight on just roughage.

Sorry, that was the long answer!

We fed our horses a sweet feed and I loved the smell !!
LOL I like to sniff the feed (and supplements) as well! For a while, Tristan was eating XTN, which is a very high-performance sweet feed, and it was the best smelling stuff I've ever found.

I don't think so. I know I've heard of it, but I certainly haven't seen it around here. It may be something else to look into when/if Tristan goes off this SafeChoice.

Standing still is Tristan's favorite thing to do:D. He's also very used to me playing "My Little Pony" (I am compulsive about grooming!), so he tends to tolerate that sort of thing very well.
