Blue Buffalo does not have a grain-free formula... they make it seem that way, but it contains Oatmeal. I WORK at Petsmart, and don't buy food there. Blue is still too overpriced for the quality, even with a discount! And dogs who eat it have black tar-like poo, and Gonzo refused to eat it. But that's just my opinion. D:

I highly recommend driving a little further to Petco. They have many more premium foods. I like Natural Balance. Wellness CORE and Solid Gold Howling at the Moon are probably the two best foods that they carry... but all of the foods in the natural section are really good. :)

We don't have a tractor supply, and our few organic food places don't sell dog food.

Where you guys get your pet food from? Are they local stores?
I get mine from Pet Supplies Plus. It's a chain store but carries good quality food.

I agree that Blue BUffalo may be the best bet at Petsmart. Their newer formula that is grain free is not bad at all. I fed the cat version to the cats for a while

However Petland, if it's anything like the ones here, is a terrible store. Maybe the one near you is better (heck, it can't be much worse! lol)

Most Petlands sell puppies, I don't think there are any that DON'T sell puppies....

So I wouldn't spend ANY money inside that store at all.
Not all Petlands sell puppies... I still don't like their company regardless... but this poster doesn't appear to have many options of places to go and get good foods.

PetSmart

PetSmart now carries two quality foods: Blue Buffalo and Castor and Pollux. I prefer Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo has eliminated the oats from it's Wilderness formula so it is now "grain free" if that's what you want.

Dog Food Choices

I haven't used Blue Buffalo but have done some checking and going with the philosophy that I would not feed my dog anything I would not eat, apparently Blue Buffalo uses human grade meat and meat is the first ingredient listed, not chicken meal or fish meal so this is all good.

Most vets do not recommend commercial dog foods and for good reason, they know what goes on in the pet food industry. Generally, meat that is used for pet food is not fit for human consumption and contain many contaminants and toxins that cause cancer in dogs. Many commercial brands use meat graded as "4D" (dead, diseased, dying, disabled), roadkill, basically. I didn't make this up, it is fact and very disturbing.

Personally, I look for natural organic dog food with certified human grade meat and read the labels very carefully.

"Meal" isn't necessarily not human grade. Meal just means that the meat is dehydrated and ground. So "chicken meal" would be dehydrated and ground chicken, where "chicken" would be chicken in the form similar to what we cook and eat. Many foods with "meal" as the first ingredient are actually higher quality than foods with a regular meat as the first ingredient. Unless of course, it's a "by-product meal."

Don't know where you live but most vets here DO recommend commercial dog foods and two of the worst ones at that: Science Diet and Royal Canin. They must get huge bribes to recommend such low quality foods.
